Porta de Mar is a small MUHBA site in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella, at Pati d'en Llimona, 6. It presents the remains of Roman baths and the eastern sea gate, where goods arriving from the coast entered the city. Look for the circular defensive towers and the remains of the public baths, built between the mid-1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Entry is free, and English translations of the displays are available. Staff can also explain the site’s history.

The sea gate and Roman wall

Porta de Mar was the eastern decuman gate in Barcelona’s Roman wall. Goods arriving from the coast entered the city here. The wall was built in the 1st century AD, and the gate was defended by circular towers. The nearby Centre Cívic Pati Llimona stands over part of the wall, gate and towers. Visiting the two sites together gives you a closer look at this stretch of Roman Barcelona.

The port baths

Public bath complexes stood outside the walls on either side of the entrance from the sea. They were built between the middle of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century AD. The remains at Porta de Mar offer a view of the facilities associated with the port area. Displays have English translations, and staff can provide further explanations about the site and its place in Roman Barcelona.
