CaixaForum Barcelona is an exhibition and cultural centre in Montjuïc, inside the former Casaramona textile factory. Josep Puig i Cadafalch designed the 1911 building, whose brickwork and industrial Modernisme details make a visit worthwhile even before you enter the galleries. The programme changes, with exhibitions covering subjects from art and photography to nature and culture, alongside performances and other events. Inside, look for the current exhibitions and take the lift to the roof terrace for views across Barcelona.

The Casaramona factory

The building began as a textile factory commissioned by Casimir Casaramona. Designed by Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, it was completed in 1911 and received the city’s award for the best industrial building that year. Its red brick, towers and crenellated roofline give the former factory a distinctive silhouette near the foot of Montjuïc.

The site’s later history was less straightforward: it briefly served as a police barracks and eventually fell into disrepair. It was declared a Historic Monument of National Interest in 1976. The cultural centre opened here in 2002, after restoration work that retained the factory’s historic character and added a new entrance by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki.

Exhibitions and events

CaixaForum’s programme centres on temporary exhibitions, with subjects spanning ancient, modern and contemporary art, photography and culture. The selection changes, so check what is on during your dates rather than planning around a particular show. Past exhibitions have included a presentation on Henri Matisse and displays about video, Pacific communities and environmental conservation.

The venue’s activities extend beyond gallery displays. Its programme can include concerts, live performances, film screenings, educational workshops and guided tours. Availability depends on the event schedule; check the centre’s website for current exhibitions and activities before setting out.

Inside the centre

The restored factory combines its original industrial fabric with a modern entrance. Exhibition rooms sit alongside spaces for cultural and educational activities, including an auditorium and classrooms. A shop and a café-restaurant are also part of the centre, with coffee, snacks and full meals mentioned among the dining options.

Exhibition information is not always available in English. Some displays use Catalan and Spanish explanations, so visitors who need English interpretation should check the details for the specific exhibition in advance. The exhibitions themselves vary in format and subject, from art displays to multimedia installations.

Planning your visit

The centre is at Av. de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 6-8, in the Montjuïc area. The roof terrace can be visited for free, while exhibition entry may be ticketed. CaixaBank members may qualify for free admission; check the current terms and any exhibition-specific conditions before visiting.

Lockers are on the ground floor and require a coin, which is returned when you open the locker. The building has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and restroom. If you are hoping to join a particular guided tour or attend an event, check the programme and ticket information ahead of time.
