The Sool Gallery is a Korean traditional liquor gallery at 18 Bukchon-ro in Seoul’s Jongno District. Its exhibition introduces Korean food and drinking culture, with displays of rice wines and other regional spirits. You can book a tasting of five Korean liquors and hear about the distilleries behind them; the selection changes monthly. The gallery also runs makgeolli-making courses followed by a tasting, and has a tea shop where you can try Korean-grown teas. It’s a useful stop in Bukchon for learning about Korean drinks beyond familiar bottled soju.
Korean liquor and food exhibits

The gallery’s displays cover Korean food and traditional liquor culture. After passing the front desk, walk through the exhibition area before reaching the main liquor display. The collection brings rice wines and spirits from different parts of South Korea together in one place. The exhibits give context to the drinks you can sample, including traditional styles such as takju, distilled soju and fruit wines. A monthly tasting selection lets you compare five liquors and hear about the distilleries that make them.
Tastings and makgeolli workshops

The tasting is a short introduction: you sample five Korean liquors in small pours, with an explanation of each. Reserve through Naver, and expect to pay a deposit per person that is returned when you check in. Tastings are free, and buying a bottle is not required. For a more hands-on visit, the gallery also runs makgeolli-making courses followed by a tasting. Staff can explain Korean food and drinks and help with liquor recommendations. The gallery has a tea shop serving special teas grown in Korea, too.
Buying bottles to take away
Bottles from different regions are available to buy at the gallery. Some rice wines are packed with ice to keep them cool. Check the drink’s packaging and travel requirements before buying for a flight: carbonated liquor may not be allowed in cabin baggage.
