The pagoda was erected in 1467 as part of Wongaksa Temple, during the reign of King Sejo. The temple later closed, and the pagoda remained at the site as a memorial. The temple buildings are no longer there, but the pagoda and a nearby monument with a tortoise and pillar preserve traces of the former complex.

The pagoda’s upper portion was knocked off during the Imjin War in the 16th century and restored in 1947. Its stone is delicate, with some areas weathering, so the monument is enclosed behind glass and protective scaffolding. You cannot get close to inspect the carved details; a zoom lens or binoculars can help you see them from outside the enclosure.
