Kurz gesagt

Novi Sad works as a day trip from Belgrade by train, but the main station is not open for passengers: trains end at Petrovaradin, and free shuttle buses run to the center. Spend the morning at Petrovaradin Fortress and the afternoon in the pedestrian center and on the Danube. Buy the train ticket with the exact train and date for both legs to get Srbijavoz's discount, and check the timetable valid until 12 December 2026.

Is Novi Sad a good day trip from Belgrade?

Novi Sad suits a day trip because its two halves, the Petrovaradin Fortress and the pedestrian center, sit on opposite banks of the Danube within a short ride of each other, and both reward a few unhurried hours. The Novi Sad travel guide explains the city, the Belgrade travel guide covers the starting point, and the Serbia guide puts the two in context. The decision that matters is not whether to go but how to arrive, because the railway arrangement is unusual.

The city's tourism organization says Novi Sad's main railway station is out of service for reconstruction and safety works, and that trains from Belgrade end at Petrovaradin station. Srbijavoz, the national passenger operator, confirms the same in its timetable note: the Novi Sad station is not open to passengers until further notice, and Petrovaradin handles all trains that connect Novi Sad with Belgrade Centar. A day trip therefore starts and ends at Petrovaradin, which turns out to be an advantage because it is the fortress side of the river.

Skip the day trip if you want nightlife on Belgrade's scale, if your only free day is a Monday and you need museums, or if you hope to see Novi Sad and Fruška Gora in the same day without a car. In those cases, an overnight stay or a guided tour does the job better, and the where to stay in Novi Sad guide compares the bases.

Getting there: Petrovaradin, not Novi Sad station

The tourism organization describes the Belgrade to Novi Sad to Subotica high-speed railway as fully operational, with the Soko high-speed train and Regio Express and Regio trains on specific routes, offering speeds up to 200 km/h, Wi-Fi, onboard service and air-conditioned carriages. Petrovaradin is the terminus for the Soko trains and for the other passenger trains from Belgrade. From there, free shuttle buses coordinated with train arrivals and departures run between the station and the city center, and a second shuttle serves Novi Sad Ranžirna, the station used by trains to Sombor and Karavukovo.

Tickets are sold through the Srbijavoz app and website, at station ticket offices and at self-service machines. The operator's own FAQ sets out the rules that matter for a day trip. A one-way ticket is valid for one day, and a return ticket for a distance of up to 100 km is valid for one day. The operator offers a 20 percent discount on return travel only if you name the exact train number and date for both legs when you buy, and if you then travel on a different train, a fee of 500 dinars is charged when the ticket is validated on board. Tickets bought on the website or in the app get a 5 percent discount. On the Soko, the fares in the FAQ include a mandatory seat reservation, first class uses only numbered reserved seats, and concession cards and other discount bases are not accepted when buying from the conductor on that train, so book ahead and check the seat rules for second class in the app.

The FAQ prints Belgrade to Subotica fares rather than Belgrade to Novi Sad, so no Novi Sad price is quoted here. Because Novi Sad lies on the way to Subotica, the fare should be lower than those figures, and the app shows the exact amount for your date. Choose the train number at the time of purchase, and keep the ticket on your phone or printed.

Srbijavoz says its 2025/26 timetable runs until 12 December 2026, so for later dates look for the new one before you plan, since station arrangements can change with it. Journey times are not quoted here because the timetable pages checked did not print them in a form that could be verified. Look at the schedule for your own date and pick a morning train and an evening return with a margin. The British government's advice notes that trains in Serbia can be slow, particularly in winter, with long delays, and that thieves operate on trains, so keep valuables in front of you.

A coach is the fallback. The tourism organization says the main Novi Sad bus station handles about 1,500 departures and arrivals daily with more than 100 operators, and suburban lines reach parts of Fruška Gora. If you drive, the city lies on the E-75 highway, and the airport link is Belgrade Nikola Tesla, about 60 minutes by road. Driving suits a day that includes Fruška Gora, but parking in the center will take a few minutes of your day.

One-day timeline

Start at Petrovaradin, since the train drops you there. Walk up to the Upper Town, which the tourism organization says is dominated by the Clock Tower, the best-known symbol of Novi Sad. The plateau around the tower offers the view over the city and the Danube. The fortress also holds the City Museum, whose contact page lists visiting hours of 9:00 to 17:00, studios, the Space Museum with a planetarium, and the Underground Military Galleries, a tour of which shows how the fortress was defended. The museum describes a system of galleries built between 1765 and 1783 as part of a 16 km network on four underground levels. Tour times and prices were not found on an official page, so ask at the fortress.

Allow about two and a half hours for the Upper Town, then walk down to the Lower Town, known as Gradić, a baroque quarter of colorful facades and narrow streets with the Church of St George and its crypt and the Church of St Paul the Apostle. Cross the Danube to the center on foot or by the free shuttle. The tourism organization's hotel list puts the fortress about 2 km from the pedestrian zone, so the walk is manageable but not short.

For lunch, the tourism organization points to traditional riverside restaurants called čarde on both banks of the Danube and on Ribarsko Ostrvo, which are the choice for fish. In the center, begin at Liberty Square, where the tourist info center at Trg slobode 3 opens 08:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays. City Hall, the Church of the Name of Mary and the Ironman Palace stand around the square, and the synagogue is close by. Walk Zmaj Jovina Street to the Orthodox Bishop's Palace and the Church of St George, then Dunavska Street down to the river and the Danube Park, a protected green space with a pond.

Choose one museum rather than three. The Museum of Vojvodina covers the province from the Paleolithic to the 20th century, the Gallery of Matica Srpska traces three centuries of Serbian art, and the Foreign Art Collection at Dunavska 29 lists visiting hours of 10:00 to 18:00. If you prefer a creative atmosphere, the tourism organization describes the Creative District in former factories as a place for concerts, workshops and bazaars. Finish with dinner in the center, then leave for the shuttle with a margin before your booked train.

What to skip

Skip a second museum, unless you start early. The fortress and the center fill a day on their own, and a third stop turns the visit into a queue of ticket desks. Skip Fruška Gora unless you have a car or a tour, because the Fruška Gora day trips from Novi Sad page shows how much time each stop needs. Skip the wineries on a day trip that depends on a train, since a tasting and a timetable do not mix.

Skip assumptions about EXIT. The festival long used the fortress, but its own news of 29 June 2026 called its 26th birthday the first without final preparations at Petrovaradin, so check exitfest.org before you plan around festival dates.

Rain plan

In rain, move the Upper Town to a clear hour and use the museums. The City Museum on the fortress, the Underground Military Galleries, and the Museum of Vojvodina in the center give you indoor options, and the Gallery of Matica Srpska and the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection add art. Cafes on Zmaj Jovina Street fill the gaps. In winter, daylight is short and trains can run late, so take an earlier train and leave Petrovaradin before dark.

When to stay overnight

Stay a night if you want an evening on the Danube, a slower pace at the fortress or a start on Fruška Gora. One night in the center costs little time and gives you both an unhurried dinner and a second morning. The where to stay in Novi Sad guide compares the center, Petrovaradin, the Fair district and Sremska Kamenica. If you stay, remember that registration within 24 hours applies to accommodation, which hotels handle automatically.

Before you go, set up an eSIM for Serbia so you can buy and show tickets, check the train and transport planning page for how to buy from the operator, and consider travel insurance, since border officers can ask for proof of health cover when you enter Serbia.

Häufige Fragen

Is Novi Sad worth a day trip from Belgrade?

Yes, if you want a calmer city with a major fortress. The fortress, the pedestrian center and the Danube promenade fit one day on foot. It is a poor fit if you want to cover two cities' worth of museums.

Which station do trains from Belgrade use in Novi Sad?

Petrovaradin. Novi Sad's main station is not open for passengers, and Srbijavoz lists Petrovaradin for trains connecting Novi Sad with Belgrade Centar. A free shuttle bus links it with the city center.

How do you buy train tickets from Belgrade to Novi Sad?

Through the Srbijavoz app or website, at station ticket offices or at self-service machines. Web and app purchases get a 5 percent discount, and the Soko high-speed train has its own seat-reservation rules.

Can you do Novi Sad and Fruška Gora in one day?

Only with a car or a tour and a very early start. Sremski Karlovci alone takes about two hours of easy walking, so pairing it with the fortress and the center makes a long day.

Do you need to register with the police on a day trip?

No, registration applies to your accommodation. If you sleep in Novi Sad, the foreign ministry says foreign visitors must be registered within 24 hours, which hotels do automatically.
