Lochranza Castle

Lochranza Castle is a ruined medieval castle on a narrow peninsula in Loch Ranza, on Arran.

Lochranza Castle is a ruined medieval castle on a narrow peninsula in Loch Ranza, on Arran. Its setting is a large part of the appeal: the water surrounds the site, and on a calm day the castle can reflect in the loch. Information boards explain its history, and you can explore a room on the first floor. The ruins are modest, so plan this as a short stop for the castle’s story and views, or take a peaceful stroll by the water. The nearby harbor is a spot to look for shells and sea glass.

A castle shaped by several centuries

Lochranza Castle

Lochranza Castle stands on a narrow peninsula in Loch Ranza, at the north of Arran. The first building on the site was a hall house, probably built in the late 13th or early 14th century and owned by the MacSweens. Robert the Bruce is said to have visited, and the castle is also associated with use as a royal hunting lodge.

The original hall house was later developed into an L-shaped tower house in the 16th century. The castle changed hands over the centuries, including to the Earl of Menteith, Robert II and the Marquess of Hamilton. It was abandoned in the 18th century. Historic Environment Scotland now cares for the ruins.

Inside the ruins

Information boards give context as you explore. You can reach the first floor and see one of the old rooms, though the building is a ruin rather than a complete castle interior. Its size makes for a brief visit; the boards and the surviving structure help explain how the site changed from an early hall house into a tower house.

The castle’s shape and position are easy to take in from outside. It sits close to the water, with views across Loch Ranza, so allow time to look around the peninsula as well as inside the walls. On a still day, the castle may be reflected in the loch.

The lochside and harbor

The shoreline makes a natural extension to a castle visit. The nearby harbor is a place for children to search among the stones for shells and sea glass. The water there is described as calm and shallow, and snorkeling is possible for those who bring their own gear.

The setting is a good reason to slow down after exploring the ruins. If you would prefer a quiet walk, follow the edge of the loch and take in the castle from outside. The landscape and water remain part of the visit even if you spend little time among the walls.
