On the shore of Loch Fyne in Inveraray, this neo-Gothic castle remains the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll and Clan Campbell. Inside, the Armoury Hall’s displays of swords, muskets and other weapons are a highlight, alongside furnished rooms and a room devoted to the Campbell family. The visit continues outside in formal gardens, woodland and extensive estate grounds. You can explore at your own pace or join a free guided tour for more context on the castle and its history.
The castle and the Campbell family

Inveraray Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, chief of Clan Campbell. The present castle was begun in 1746, replacing an earlier building, and its design is associated with William and John Adam. Its neo-Gothic exterior, with turrets and conical roofs, rises beside Loch Fyne.
A fire damaged the castle in 1877. The building was later restored, with a third floor and conical roofs added to the corner towers. The castle remains a family home, so only some of its rooms are open to visitors.
Inside the castle

The rooms open to the public include furnished interiors and displays connected to the Campbell family. The Armoury Hall is a central stop: weapons including swords, muskets and pikes are arranged across its walls. Other rooms show furniture, tapestries and artworks, while the Clan Campbell room gives attention to the family’s history.
A self-guided visit lets you move through the rooms at your own pace, with information boards providing details along the way. A free guided tour is available at 1pm and can help put the displays and family history in context. If that matters to you, plan around the tour rather than arriving after it has started.
Gardens and estate grounds
The castle is surrounded by formal gardens and a larger estate with woodland walks. In May, rhododendrons and azaleas bring colour to the gardens. Paths through the grounds give you time outdoors after visiting the interior, and the woodland walk extends the visit beyond the formal planting.
The wider estate includes a farm and a folly on the wooded hill above the castle. There is also a tea room and a shop on site. The tea room can get busy, so a picnic is a practical alternative if you would rather spend your time walking in the grounds.
