Souk Al Zal
Markt

Souk Al Zal

Souk Al Zal is a traditional market in the historic Al-Dirah neighbourhood of Riyadh.

Souk Al Zal is a traditional market in the historic Al-Dirah neighbourhood of Riyadh. It is one of the oldest souks in the city, and its covered lanes have traded for more than a century. The market is best known for antiques, handicrafts, old utensils and rare coins. Narrow alleys lead past boutiques and artisan workshops, and the stalls also sell carpets, traditional clothing, leather sandals and pottery. Scent guides you through the market, since many stalls sell oud and bukhour. It is the place in Riyadh to go for old objects with a story.

A market in the historic Al-Dirah district

The market sits in the historic Al-Dirah neighbourhood of Riyadh and has been open since 1901. Its history makes it one of the oldest and largest antique markets in the city, and it has long been a place where Riyadh residents shop for traditional goods.

The souk grew up as a network of alleys rather than a single hall. Boutiques and artisan workshops line the lanes, so the walk itself is part of the visit. Al Masmak Fort is in the same area and within walking distance.

What the stalls sell

Antiques and handicrafts are the market's main draw. Vendors sell old utensils, rare coins, musical instruments and items linked to ancient folk traditions. Visitors can also find carpets, pottery, cushions and textiles.

Traditional clothing is still sold here. Shoppers come for the bisht, a formal cloak, and for agal, the cord that holds the headdress in place. The agal is hand-spun in the souk. Leather sandals are on sale too.

Scent is part of the experience. Stalls selling oud and bukhour, the Arabian incense, are easy to find by following the smell through the lanes.

How a visit works

Most stalls are open to haggling, especially for carpets, antiques and clothing. Sellers are friendly and will talk about the origin of an object if you ask. Take time with each stall, since the history of an item is often what makes it worth buying.

The souk opens in the late afternoon and stays open into the evening. Daily auctions begin at 6 pm, so arriving then lets you see the auction part of the market. Dim lights over the lanes give the evening a quieter feel than the daytime heat.
