The Rostral Columns recall the area’s connection to Russia’s maritime past, while the former Stock Exchange building stands behind them. Come for a walk, photographs or a view of the city’s historic waterfront. Cultural events and outdoor activities also take place here during the year.

Views from the eastern tip

Strelka occupies the eastern end of Vasilievsky Island, where the Neva opens up a broad view of central St Petersburg. The Winter Palace and Peter and Paul Fortress are visible across the water, alongside the Admiralty and St Isaac’s Cathedral. The embankment’s colourful buildings frame the river and give the viewpoint a close connection to the city’s historic centre.

The name Strelka means “arrow” or “spit,” a reference to this projecting point of land. It is a natural place to pause during a walk around the island or to take photographs of the river and skyline.

The Rostral Columns and the old port

The two Rostral Columns are among Strelka’s defining landmarks. Their forms recall Russia’s maritime power and the site’s past as a historic port. In the 19th century, the columns also served as navigational lamps.

Behind them stands the old Stock Exchange building. Strelka was selected as a place for the city’s administration under Peter the Great, and historically important buildings and museums line the area. The setting brings together the waterfront, civic architecture and reminders of the island’s role in trade and naval history.
