Catherine Palace is an imperial summer residence in Pushkin, south of St Petersburg, known for its blue-and-white Russian Baroque exterior and lavish restored rooms. Inside, the Amber Room is the standout, with amber panels and golden decoration. The palace visit follows a timed entry, so book ahead and check which entrance matches your ticket. Set aside time for Catherine Park too: its lawns, paths, lakes, bridges and pavilions make the grounds a major part of the visit. Food choices on site are limited, so plan a meal or bring snacks.

From Catherine I’s residence to a grand palace

The palace stands in Pushkin, formerly known as Tsarskoye Selo, south of St Petersburg. Its story began in 1717, when Peter the Great commissioned a residence for his wife, Catherine I. The first building was modest compared with the palace seen today.

Their daughter, Empress Elizabeth, ordered a major expansion. Architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli reshaped the building into a grand Baroque palace, with a pale blue and white exterior and gold details. Empress Catherine the Great later left her mark on the palace’s history and interiors. Russian monarchs used the estate as a summer residence, and the surrounding grounds developed alongside it.

Restored rooms and the Amber Room

The palace is known for its ceremonial rooms and elaborate decoration. Visitors pass through richly ornamented interiors with gilding, artwork, chandeliers and painted ceilings. Many rooms and details have been reconstructed after the palace suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. Of the 58 halls destroyed, 32 have been recreated.

The Amber Room is the best-known interior. Its walls are covered with amber panels and golden ornaments. The original room disappeared or was destroyed during the war; the chamber now on view is a reconstruction completed in 2003 after years of work. The palace tour is relatively short, so take time to look closely at the rooms rather than treating the visit as a walk through to the Amber Room alone.

Catherine Park beyond the palace

Catherine Park spreads around the palace, with formal gardens, open lawns, lakes, paths, bridges and pavilions. Its design changed over time: regular gardens were laid out in the first half of the 18th century, then parts of the grounds were extended and reshaped as English-style landscape parks became popular.

The Hermitage Pavilion sits on an island in the park’s lake. It was built as a private retreat for the imperial family and used for small banquets and gatherings. Mechanical tables once carried meals up from below, keeping servants out of the guests’ rooms. Leave time to walk beyond the palace façade; the park’s scale and its scattered buildings are part of what makes a visit here longer than the indoor tour.
