The ogival main portal is a notable feature, with basalt stonework and foliate capitals supporting its archivolts. Look closely at the carved decoration on the main entrance: faces from the Manueline period represent good and evil.

King Manuel I donated the side portal, which has three marble columns. These entrances offer a close look at the church’s Gothic and Manueline elements from outside.

Inside the church

The interior was substantially altered during the Baroque period. Two side chapels are original; one bears the coat of arms of the Teixeira family. Take a quiet moment to notice the contrast between these surviving features and the later changes to the church.

A Christmas crib is another detail to look for when it is on display. Renovation work has taken place at the church, so check for updates before your visit.
