Praça do Comércio, also called Terreiro do Paço, is a broad riverside square in central Lisbon, framed by yellow arcades and the Tagus. The Rua Augusta Arch marks the entrance to Baixa, while an equestrian statue of King José I stands at the square’s centre. Come to take in the architecture, walk down to the water or pause at a café beneath the arcades. Near sunset, the light falls across the buildings and river; bring water, as shade in the open square is limited.

Praça do Comércio is also known as Terreiro do Paço, or Palace Square. Lisbon’s Royal Ribeira Palace once stood here. The 1755 earthquake destroyed it, and the square took its place as the city was rebuilt.

Today, yellow buildings with arcades frame the open space beside the Tagus. The scale is easy to appreciate from the centre, where the equestrian statue of King José I faces the surrounding façades.

The Arco da Rua Augusta stands at the northern edge of the square, linking it with Rua Augusta and the historic Baixa district. Walk beneath the arch to continue into the busy central streets, or stay in the square to see how its broad layout meets the waterfront.

The arch is also a viewpoint over the square, the river and the city. The arcades provide a place to stop for a café, though the prices can be higher than elsewhere nearby.

At the water’s edge

Walk south across the square to reach the Tagus. The open riverfront gives you a different view of the buildings and is a natural place to pause before continuing through the centre. The square is also used as a departure point for river boat tours.

Sunset brings warm light to the façades and the water. The square has little shade, so carry water if you plan to spend time walking around it during the day.
