Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade is a headland just south of Lagos, in the western Algarve.

Ponta da Piedade is a headland just south of Lagos, in the western Algarve. Golden cliffs rise up to 20 metres above the Atlantic, and the sea has cut them into arches, tunnels, grottoes and free-standing stacks. The water below is clear and shades from turquoise to emerald. It is not a beach in the usual sense. You see it from the clifftop, from a wooden boardwalk beside a lighthouse, down a long staircase to the water, or from a boat or kayak. A walk along the top and a trip on the water show two different sides of the same coast.

Cliffs, arches and sea caves

Ponta da Piedade is the southern headland of Lagos. Its cliffs are golden to orange in colour and rise up to 20 metres above the sea. Waves, wind and rain have worn them over thousands of years into arches, tunnels, grottoes and stacks that stand apart from the shore. Low tide uncovers rock pools and layers of stone along the base.

The water between the rocks is shallow and sheltered, and its colour runs from turquoise to deep emerald against the warm stone. Many of the caves and grottoes can only be reached from the water.

People in Lagos use the name for the whole headland, and there are many viewing spots along it. The one most visitors mean is the grotto at the far end, with its stacks, caves and arches.

Walking the headland

The road from Lagos ends at the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse, which stands on top of the cliffs. From the viewpoint you can see east towards Carvoeiro and west towards Sagres and Cape St Vincent, and the two sides look quite different.

A boardwalk starts at the lighthouse and ends at Praia do Canavial. It is about 2 km one way. It was built to make the cliffs safe to visit, and for most of its length it keeps away from the edge. Footpaths run parallel to it, but the sandstone edge is dangerous, so keep to the boardwalk or the marked paths.

The boardwalk is also part of a longer route. From Lagos you can walk as far as Luz, about 11 km, on the Passadiços da Ponta da Piedade. This section belongs to the Fishermen's Trail, a hike of 13 sections and 263 km in total. Another coastal walk, the Lagos Cliff Walk, starts at Praia da Batata and follows the shore from the town centre to the headland. Walking from the old town to the point takes about 40 minutes.

Steps down to the water

A staircase leads from the clifftop to the water's edge. It has 182 steps, so the return climb is a real effort. If part of your group would rather not do it, the views are already good from about 30 steps down the walled path, and the walls make that stretch feel secure.

At the bottom you are close to the rock, with the clear water inside the stacks and a different angle on the arches. Take care on wet stone. Some of the other trails on the headland are rough and are not suitable for small children.

Seeing it from the sea

Seeing the headland from the water is the usual way to appreciate the scale of the formations. Boat, kayak and stand-up paddleboard tours all run here, and Ponta da Piedade is one of the traditional places for this kind of trip. Guided kayak tours can start at Praia da Batata, next to the centre of Lagos, and finish at the headland. Motorboat trips usually leave from Lagos.

A handful of shops along the clifftop rent gear and book places on guided excursions. On the water you can enter caves and creeks and pass through tunnels that cut deep into the headland. Many of the formations have names. Boat trips point out the Arco do Triunfo, the Cozinha, the Garagem, the Sala, the Catedral, the Corredor and the Monstro.

Birds, flowers and conservation

In spring the headland has nesting egrets in large numbers and wild orchids across the surrounding ground. Depending on the season, birdwatchers can also look for the cattle egret, the red-rumped swallow and the Iberian magpie.

The cliffs are fragile. Erosion makes them unstable, and landslides happen every year. The municipality of Lagos is working with the Portuguese Environment Agency on a project to give the area conservation status. Keep to the paths and boardwalk, and do not walk close to the edge.
