The Palace on the Isle sits on an artificial island in Łazienki Park, a little outside central Warsaw. Built as a bathhouse in the 17th century, it became King Stanisław August’s summer residence and now houses a museum of decorative and artistic arts. Cross the footbridge to see its lavish rooms, including the Ballroom and Solomon Room, and a gallery with paintings and sculptures. Outside, paths wind through gardens in French and English styles, past the lake, pavilions and peacocks.
From bathhouse to royal residence

The building began as a bathhouse in the 17th century. In 1764, King Stanisław August acquired it and had it changed into a summer residence. Its setting on an artificial island divides the lake into two parts, with water surrounding the palace.
The residence is associated with the last king of Poland. He expanded the grounds and commissioned Neoclassical buildings, drawing on the English garden style popular in 18th-century Europe. The palace’s earlier Baroque beginnings and later Neoclassical character are both part of its history.
Inside the palace and across the grounds

Inside, the rooms include the Ballroom and Solomon Room. The palace also has a gallery with works from the king’s original collection, including paintings and sculptures. The collection has been described as holding 140 original works; paintings by Rubens and Rembrandt are among the artists represented.
Cross the footbridge to enter the palace, then continue outside to see the gardens and the lake from different paths. Łazienki Park also contains other palaces and pavilions, including Myślewicki Palace, as well as a summer amphitheatre. Peacocks and other birds may be seen around the grounds.
