At Pijarska 15 in Kraków’s Old Town, the Czartoryski Museum brings Polish history and European art together in a collection of paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and historical objects. Its best-known work is Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine, shown in a dedicated room. You can also see Rembrandt’s Landscape with the Good Samaritan, alongside objects such as Egyptian artefacts, ceramics, glass, textiles and military items. The varied displays give you more to explore than a single famous painting.

A collection shaped by the Czartoryski family

The museum’s collection began with Princess Izabela Czartoryska, who founded it in 1796 to preserve Polish heritage. It was first assembled outside Kraków, in Puławy. The family’s collection later moved to Kraków after their estate was confiscated in the aftermath of the 1831 Insurrection, in which the family was implicated.

The museum opened in Kraków in the 19th century and is among Poland’s oldest. Its collection brings together works associated with Polish history as well as art and objects from other cultures. Paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and historical memorabilia sit alongside ancient and military objects, giving the visit a broader scope than a conventional painting gallery.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine is the museum’s best-known work. The painting has a room of its own, so you can make time to see it without overlooking the rest of the collection. If it is a priority, book ahead: advance booking is advised for access to the painting.

Another major work is Rembrandt’s Landscape with the Good Samaritan. The collection also includes paintings by artists such as Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jacob Jordaens. Together, the works offer different subjects and styles to look for as you move through the galleries.

Look beyond the paintings

The displays include objects that extend the story into art, craft and history. Look for mediaeval enamels, carvings in ivory, amber and coral, ceramics, Venetian glass and Augsburg silver. Textiles, Persian rugs and Polish and Oriental military items add further variety.

Other parts of the collection include Egyptian artefacts, ancient jewellery, sculpture, furniture and weapons. Polish historical memorabilia and literary works connect the objects to people and events beyond the art galleries. The museum’s mix of material rewards a slower visit: an audio guide from reception can add context, while guided tours provide another way to explore the collection.
