Metropolitan Natural Park is a protected tropical forest within Panama City, with walking trails, wildlife and viewpoints over the city and the Panama Canal. The paths pass through dense vegetation, and a quiet, observant walk may bring sightings of monkeys, sloths, coatis, birds and insects. Head to Cerro Cedro for a view from the park’s highest point. Trails vary in difficulty, including steep sections, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time. The park suits a nature-focused break from the city, especially for birdwatchers and families who enjoy walking outdoors.

A tropical forest within the city

Metropolitan Natural Park

Metropolitan Natural Park protects 232 hectares of tropical forest inside Panama City. Its trails cross a green area that borders the Panama Canal basin, bringing forest close to the city’s built-up districts. The park is known as a wildlife refuge and is a practical choice for a walk in nature without planning a trip far beyond the capital.

The forest is home to a broad range of plants and animals. The park’s recorded biodiversity includes hundreds of bird species, as well as mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Trees, butterflies and insects are part of the experience too. Atta leaf-cutter ants may be seen carrying pieces of leaves along the ground. Some trees in the park grow to more than 100 feet tall.

Several walking trails wind through the forest, and their difficulty varies. Some are suitable for a gentler walk; others include steep stretches. Take the route at a pace that feels manageable, and wear shoes suited to uneven hiking paths. The park also has viewpoints, including Cerro Cedro, its highest point, where the view looks out over Panama City. Views of the Panama Canal are another reason to bring a camera.

The forest is dense, so wildlife can take patience to find. Monkeys, sloths, coatis, agoutis, turtles and birds are among the animals associated with the park. Toucans, parakeets and trogons are among the birds recorded here. A sighting is not guaranteed, but walking quietly and paying attention to movement and calls can help. Binoculars are useful if birdwatching is part of your visit.

Planning a visit

The park is at Av. Juan Pablo II, north of Curundu Heights, and can be reached by car or taxi. The entrance and visitor center are near the car park. Park staff can provide guidance on the trails, and a ranger-led tour can be arranged at the visitor center.

Early morning and late afternoon are the suggested times for better wildlife viewing. Panama’s humid conditions make water and comfortable walking shoes useful. Drinking-water fountains are available along the trails. The park works well for a short nature outing, a family walk or a birdwatching visit; choose a different plan if you are looking for a strenuous, remote trek.
