Kurz gesagt

Stay inside the Walls for a first visit, since the ramparts, Guildhall and evening streets are on foot. Choose Ebrington across the Peace Bridge for river views and a calmer night, Foyle Street or Strand Road for bus arrivals and budgets, and the Limavady coast only if you have a car. Book early for Derry Halloween, 28 October to 1 November 2026.

How to choose a base in Derry

Derry is one of the easiest places in Northern Ireland to choose a base, because the old city is small enough to walk end to end. The Derry travel guide covers the sights, and this page settles where to sleep. It also fits a wider Northern Ireland trip, where Derry is often the western stop after Belfast and the Causeway Coast. For most first visits the answer is inside the Walls, with Ebrington as the calmer alternative and Foyle Street or Strand Road as the practical, lower-cost options.

Three questions decide the choice. The first is how you arrive. Tourism NI describes a Belfast train and bus of about two hours, with the bus arriving at the Foyle Street bus center, and a Dublin coach that takes at least 3 hours 45 minutes. If you arrive by coach with luggage, a base near Foyle Street saves a taxi. The second is noise. Streets inside the Walls are lively on weekend nights, while the river side is calmer. The third is the calendar: Derry Halloween fills the Walled City, and the area's rooms go early.

Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple hotel or guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale or boutique hotel. Rates move with events such as Halloween week, so compare the total price at checkout before you commit. Rooms in the old core are limited in number, so they sell out before larger hotels at the edge of the center.

The Walled City is the historic core and the easiest base for a first visit. Visit Derry says the Walls were built in 1613 to 1619, run about 1.6 km around the center and form a walkway you can follow on top of the ramparts. The Guildhall, St Columb's Cathedral and the Tower Museum sit inside or beside the circuit, so most of the sights are a short walk from your room.

The appeal is evenings. Restaurants, bars and music venues cluster in the streets within the Walls, and you can walk back after dinner without a taxi. Tourism NI also notes that the Walls are lit at night, which makes a post-dinner stroll a good use of a base here. A room with a view over the Guildhall or the walls is a premium choice, so look at the location and not just the star rating.

The trade-offs are noise and space. Weekend nights can be loud, and older buildings can have small rooms and few lifts. Parking is limited in a historic core, so a car is a liability. If you sleep lightly, ask for an upper-floor or rear room and read recent reviews for noise before you book.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you want a quiet street, easy parking or a modern room with views of the river. Ebrington is calmer.

Choose the Walls when you want to walk out to the Guildhall and back after dinner.

2. Ebrington and the Waterside

Best for
River views, calm nights

Ebrington sits across the River Foyle, reached on foot over the Peace Bridge. Tourism NI describes Ebrington Square as a former army barracks transformed into a public space for open-air events, art exhibitions and concerts, and the area is on the Waterside, the opposite bank from the Walls. A base here puts you on the modern side of the city with views back to the old core.

St Columb's Cathedral, Derry (Londonderry): A church with a clock on the front of it
St Columb's Cathedral, Derry (Londonderry)

It suits couples, river-walk fans and anyone who wants a calmer night than the Walled City offers. You can cross the Peace Bridge in the morning, walk the Walls and return across it in the evening, which makes the route part of the trip. Event weekends at Ebrington Square can bring crowds and noise, so check the program for your dates before you book.

The limit is distance from the Bogside and the Museum of Free Derry, which sit on the Walled City's side. The walk is short, but you cross the river twice if you go back and forth. If you plan to spend most of your time in the old streets, the Walls base is simpler.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you want to step straight onto the ramparts or be closest to the Bogside. A room inside the Walls is better.

If you want calmer nights and don't mind crossing the Peace Bridge, stay on this bank.

3. Foyle Street and Strand Road

Best for
Bus arrivals, budgets
Walk to the Walls
Short walk
Arrive by
Bus center at Foyle Street
Price band
$

Foyle Street is where Tourism NI says the bus from Belfast arrives, and Strand Road runs along the edge of the center. This is the practical base. If you arrive by coach with luggage, or you leave on an early bus, a room near the bus center saves a taxi and a worry. Prices tend to be lower at the edge of a historic center than inside it, though that depends on dates.

The area is a short walk from the Walls, and the walk is flat enough to manage with a small bag. It is also close to shops and restaurants along the main streets, and Tourism NI names a well-known restaurant on Strand Road. The area is less atmospheric after dark than the old core, so plan to walk or take a short taxi ride for dinner.

The limit is character. You trade the feeling of staying inside a historic city for convenience and a lower price. For a one-night stay with a late arrival or an early bus, that is often the right trade.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you want old streets and live music at your door. Inside the Walls is livelier.

4. Limavady and the north coast

Best for
Drivers, coast days
Walk to the Walls
Drive needed
Arrive by
Car from Derry
Price band
$$

Tourism NI lists resort-style stays outside Limavady, along with Magilligan, Downhill beach and Mussenden Temple on the coast. This is a base for drivers who want a quieter setting and the north coast on the doorstep. Downhill and the temple are among the most photographed places in Northern Ireland, according to Tourism NI, and a coast-side room puts them within a short drive.

The trade-off is that Derry itself becomes a drive. You will need a car for dinner, the Walls and any evening plans, and parking in the city adds a search. That makes it a sensible choice for a two-night trip with a clear plan, but a poor one for a short, city-focused visit.

Use it if you are combining Derry with the Causeway Coast and want to save a long drive on the second day. See the Causeway Coast guide for what lies along that route.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you plan to see Derry on foot and eat out in the evening. A base in or beside the center is easier.

A good pick when the Causeway Coast is your plan and Derry is a short visit.

How the four bases compare

The table gives a short version. Read "Walk to the Walls" as the main practical difference, and remember that the whole center is compact. If you have a car, decide where you will park before you decide where you will sleep.

If you only have one night, stay inside the Walls and spend the evening there. If you have two, split them: a night inside the Walls, then a calmer night at Ebrington or on the coast if you are heading toward the Causeway Coast or Inishowen next. The Derry in one day page shows how a single day uses each part of the city.

Derry Halloween and other busy dates

Visit Derry lists Derry Halloween for 28 October to 1 November 2026, which it calls Europe's largest Halloween festival and the festival's 40th year. The Walled City fills with street events, and the nearest rooms go first. If you want to be there, book a base as soon as you have dates, and consider Ebrington or Foyle Street if the Walled City is full. Check the program on the official Derry Halloween page for events that need tickets.

Museum of Free Derry, Derry (Londonderry)

Outside the festival, the city is usually calmer, though weekends and event dates can still raise prices. Check cancellation terms before you pay, particularly if you are linking Derry with a ferry or a flight, and compare a flexible rate against a cheaper non-refundable one.

If you plan sightseeing, the official Visit Derry Pass covers ten attractions over one or two days, according to Visit Derry. It helps only if you plan several paid visits, so count the sights before you buy.

Arriving and leaving: matching the base to your transport

The best base often depends on how you reach the city and how you leave. Tourism NI says City of Derry Airport sits about 10 km north-east of the center and that Ulsterbus runs scheduled services between the airport and the Foyle Street bus depot, with a taxi rank outside the terminal. That means an airport arrival lands you in the same part of town as a coach arrival, so the Foyle Street area works for both, and a taxi onward to the Walls is short.

If you arrive by train from Belfast, check where the station sits relative to your room on the day you book, since a short walk with a small bag is easy and a long one is not. If you hire a car, choose a base with parking you have confirmed in writing, because the old core has little of it. Drivers heading on to Inishowen or the Causeway Coastal Route can also pick Ebrington or the coast, where leaving in the morning is simpler.

Late arrivals deserve a plan. Tourism NI describes a Dublin coach of at least 3 hours 45 minutes and a Belfast journey of about two hours, so a long day of travel can end after dark. A base at the edge of the center, with a short taxi from the stop, beats a room inside the Walls that you reach on foot over cobbles with a suitcase. Ask the host about late check-in before you pay.

Mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is booking by price alone without checking the location. Derry is small, but a room across the river or at the edge of the center changes the evening. Look at the map, check the route to the Walls and read recent reviews for noise.

A second mistake is booking a hotel with a car park and then not using the car. The city is easy to walk, and Tourism NI says there is no need to use anything but your feet. Pay for parking only if you plan to drive out to the coast or Inishowen.

A third is forgetting entry rules if you arrive from Donegal. Visa-exempt visitors who do not live in Ireland need a UK ETA to enter Northern Ireland, and the UK ETA explained page covers who qualifies. Carry a passport even where nobody checks it, and check your travel insurance covers both sides of the border. An eSIM helps with maps and bookings, and the transport planning page covers trains, buses and hire cars between Belfast, Derry and the coast.

Häufige Fragen

What is the best area to stay in Derry for first-time visitors?

Inside the Walls, where the Guildhall, the Tower Museum and the ramparts are on foot and restaurants and bars sit within a few streets. Ebrington, across the Peace Bridge, is a calmer alternative that is still a short walk from the Walls.

Is it better to stay inside the city walls or outside?

Inside suits a short stay with no car, and outside suits budgets or arrivals by bus. The city is small, so even the outer bases are a short walk or taxi ride. The real trade-off is atmosphere against price and parking.

Where should you stay for Derry Halloween?

As close to the Walled City as you can book, since the festival centers on it. Visit Derry lists Derry Halloween for 28 October to 1 November 2026. Rooms inside and near the Walls go first, so reserve early or choose Ebrington.

Do you need a car in Derry?

No, for the city itself. Tourism NI says there is no need to use anything other than your feet. A car helps only for Inishowen, the north coast or an out-of-town base, and city parking adds a cost and a search.

Is Derry good as a base for the Causeway Coast and Donegal?

Yes, as a base for drivers. Inishowen in Donegal and the Causeway Coastal Route both start close to the city, so two nights here can cover the city, one border-crossing day and one coast day.
