Stay in the old town for a first two-night visit, because the fortress, St. Sophia and the lanes are all on foot. Choose Kaneo for quiet lake views, the lakefront for an easy, central base, and the Ohrid Riviera only if beach days matter more than churches and you have a car. Ask every host about stairs, parking and how a late arrival works.

How to choose a base in Ohrid
Ohrid is small enough that no base is far from the lake, so the choice is about walking, noise and whether you arrive with a car. The Ohrid travel guide covers the town and its sights, the North Macedonia guide places the lake in the wider trip, and this page settles where to sleep. Four areas cover almost every kind of stay: the old town, the former fishing quarter of Kaneo, the lakefront streets, and the beach strip known as the Ohrid Riviera.
Three questions decide it. Do you want churches and a fortress within a few minutes on foot, or a beach in front of the hotel? Will you arrive by car, or by taxi and bus? And how many nights are you staying? A two-night stop between Skopje and the road onward is a different problem from a week on the lake with day trips. If you are still deciding on length, Ohrid in 2 days shows what fits into a short visit.
The old town matters because it is the reason most people come. UNESCO describes Ohrid as one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, built mostly between the 7th and 19th centuries, with a very narrow network of streets and well-preserved late-Ottoman houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Narrow streets are charming on arrival day and tiring when you carry luggage, which is why the base decision is mostly a decision about stairs and parking.
Prices in this guide are relative bands: $ is a simple guesthouse or apartment, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ a well-placed boutique hotel. Rates change with the season and with events, so compare the total at booking, including taxes and breakfast. The page quotes no nightly rates because none was checked.
1. Old Town
The old town sits on the slopes between the lake and the fortress, and almost everything a first-time visitor wants is inside it. The tourism portal lists the Cathedral of St. Sophia, built in the 10th century on the foundations of an early Christian basilica and now used for services, concerts and as a museum. It also lists the church of the Holy Mother Perivlepta, known locally as St. Clement, and the small church of St. Constantine and Helen beside it. Samuel's Fortress above the lanes keeps 18 towers and four gates, and the portal puts its walls at 10 to 16 meters high. Sleeping here means you can walk out for a first coffee, visit a church before the tour groups arrive and be back in your room at midday for the heat.
The trade-off is access. UNESCO's description stresses how narrow the street network is, and in practice that means limited space for cars, steep stairs and cobbles that do not suit wheeled suitcases. Ask the host exactly where a taxi can stop, how many steps lead to the door and whether there is any parking within reach. If you arrive with a rental car, the answer decides the stay, and the getting-there guide explains why a car is useful on the lake but awkward in the lanes.
Sound is the other point to check. Old-town evenings are lively in summer, and rooms facing a lane with cafes can carry voices late. Ask for a courtyard or an upper floor, and check whether windows close properly and whether there is air conditioning, since old stone houses hold heat in July and August.

2. Kaneo
Kaneo is the quarter under the church of St John, the 13th-century building that the tourism portal calls one of the most photographed symbols of Ohrid. The portal notes that the name comes from the former fishing village, and that the church was restored after conservation work in 1963 and 1964. Staying here is a decision for light and calm: mornings on the water, a lake view from a terrace and an evening walk with fewer crowds than in the middle of the old town.
The practical points are access and choice. Rooms tend to be in small guesthouses and houses rather than large hotels, so the number of beds is smaller and good rooms go early in July and August. The walk to the main lanes is on the same shoreline, but the return leg is uphill, and a late dinner in the center ends with a climb. Check how a taxi reaches the property and where it drops you, and ask whether the last stretch is a path. If you plan to swim, ask the host about the nearest place to get into the water, since entry points vary along the shore.
Kaneo suits couples, photographers and anyone whose idea of a lake trip is a quiet morning. It suits less well a family with a pram, a traveler who wants many restaurants within a few steps, or a stay built around nightlife.

3. Lakefront
The lakefront means the streets where the modern town meets the water, outside the stone lanes of the old quarter. It is the most practical base for a first stay of one or two nights: the ground is flatter, taxis stop at the door, and cafes and restaurants are close. The old town is a short walk or ride away, so you give up little on sightseeing while gaining an easy arrival and departure.
The cost is atmosphere and noise. In July and August the lake edge is the busiest part of town, and a room facing a promenade or a bar terrace will hear it late. Ask whether the room faces the street or a back courtyard, and look at recent guest comments on noise. If you want the convenience but not the volume, a room one or two streets back from the water is the quieter bet.
This area suits families, travelers who arrive late and groups who need a place for cars. It is also the right fallback when the old town is full: you can still walk in for the churches in the morning and return for a long break at midday.

4. Ohrid Riviera
The Ohrid Riviera is the beach strip that runs from the town along the road toward the monastery of St. Naum. The tourism portal lists Gorica, 4 km from Ohrid, Slavija, also 4 km out near St. Stefan, with a 75-meter toboggan as its main attraction, Metropol and Bellevue at 8 km, and the long Lagadin beach, 285 meters, with parties and a platform for drinks and socializing. It also lists the Eleshec auto camp at 10 km, with bungalows and camp spaces for around 700 beds. In other words, this is where a beach holiday happens, with resort hotels and camps instead of old stone houses.
The price of a beach base is distance. Every trip to the old town is a taxi or a drive, and an evening in the center means arranging the ride home. Parking close to the old town can be tight in summer, so check with the host before you count on it. If you do not have a car, check how a taxi is arranged from the property and whether the host can book one for the morning of your departure.
The Riviera suits families with children who want a beach at the door, groups with a car and people whose priority is swimming. It suits less well a first visit built around churches, or a trip of two nights where transfers would eat the time.

Choose this shore for swimming, especially if you have a car and a family.

Choosing by length of stay and arrival
For one or two nights, sleep in the old town or on the lakefront. A short stay is too short to spend on transfers, and the main value of Ohrid is the walkable core. The old town wins if you are comfortable with stairs; the lakefront wins if you arrive late by taxi or have heavy bags.
For three to five nights, a split can work better than one address. Start in the old town for the churches, then move to Kaneo or the Riviera for the quiet or the beach, or choose one base and treat the rest as day trips. For a week or more, the Riviera becomes sensible, particularly if you add day trips to the south shore and to Struga on the northern side, where the Crn Drim leaves the lake.
If you land at the airport, the arrival hour matters more than the area. The Ohrid airport site says there is no regular shuttle bus, only tour and charter shuttles run by local agencies, and that taxis are available according to flight arrivals. The town is about 9 km from the airport. Send your host your flight number, ask who will let you in and confirm a pickup if the building has no reception. Do not assume a small guesthouse has a night desk.
Questions to ask before you book
A handful of questions prevent most disappointments. First, how many steps lead to the door, and where can a taxi or car stop? Second, does the room have air conditioning, and does it work quietly? Ohrid is hot in July and August, and a stuffy room on the first night sets a bad tone. Third, how does check-in work, and what happens if your flight or bus is late? Fourth, are breakfast, taxes and any local fees included in the total shown?
Fifth, ask about police registration. UK government advice says visitors must register with the local police within 48 hours of arrival, that hotel staff do it at check-in, and that you should keep the registration document until you leave the country. If you stay with a private host, ask who files the registration and whether you receive a copy. Do not leave this to chance, because the same advice lists a fine, detention and a restriction on returning among the possible consequences of not registering.
Sixth, ask about luggage storage for the last day. Many travelers leave on a late bus or flight, so a place to leave the bag for a few hours is worth more than a pool. Seventh, if you plan to swim in town, ask the host where the nearest public access is and whether the water is easy to enter. The tourism portal says visibility in the lake can reach 22 meters in places, which is part of the draw, but entry points vary a lot along the shore.
Mistakes to avoid
The most common error is booking a stylish room at the top of the old town and discovering the stairs with a suitcase at midnight. The second is booking a Riviera beach hotel for two nights and spending the time in taxis. The third is booking the cheapest room on the busiest part of the lakefront and discovering the noise in August. The fourth is skipping the arrival message: a host who does not know your flight cannot help at 1 a.m.
The last mistake is treating Ohrid as a single-day stop. The town repays a slow second day, and a base that lets you walk back to the room at midday for a rest in summer makes the day easier. Plan the hot hours indoors, in a church or the room, and go out again in the evening. A day trip to the Mavrovo National Park or a long drive to the capital is better treated as a separate leg of the trip, with its own night.
When to book and what to set up first
Book earlier for July and August, when the beaches and the old town are at their busiest. May, June, September and early October give warm days with more choice and calmer lanes. In winter the town is quiet and many beach properties close, so an old-town or lakefront base is the simplest option.
Compare the total, not the headline rate. Check the cancellation terms, whether breakfast is included and how the price changes if you add a night. Set up the basics before you fly: an eSIM for North Macedonia keeps maps and taxi calls working from the arrivals hall, travel insurance covers cancellations and medical care, and the transport planner helps with the bus or car choice for the days before and after the lake. North Macedonia is not in the Schengen area, so passport checks apply at every border; the guide to visa-free stay limits covers how long you can stay.
Häufige Fragen
What is the best area to stay in Ohrid for a first visit?
The old town. The fortress, the St. Sophia cathedral and the lanes of late-Ottoman houses are on foot from the door, so you spend time seeing the town instead of riding to it.
Is Kaneo a good place to stay in Ohrid?
Yes, if you want lake light and quiet mornings. Kaneo is the former fishing quarter under the church of St John, so rooms tend to be in small guesthouses, and walking back uphill is part of the deal.
Do you need a car if you stay in Ohrid?
Not in the old town, Kaneo or the lakefront. You need one, or taxis, for the Riviera beaches, which the tourism portal places 4 to 10 km from town, and for day trips to St. Naum.
Is it better to stay in Ohrid or Struga?
Ohrid for churches, the fortress and evening strolls. Struga sits on the north shore where the Crn Drim leaves the lake and works as a quieter second base, but it adds a daily transfer to the old town.
How many nights should you spend in Ohrid?
Two nights cover the main sights. Add a third for the monastery of St. Naum or Struga, and more if you want long beach days on the Riviera.
