The museum follows the people who have made Petone their home. Its displays cover the area’s Māori history and the arrival of early British settlers, then turn to the industrial era and later changes. Together, the exhibitions place local stories within the wider history of New Zealand.

Audio and video displays provide additional context. One video about New Zealand’s history runs for around 25 minutes, so allow time for it if you want to watch the full presentation.

The museum is housed in the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial Building, constructed in 1940 to mark the centenary of the arrival of the first British immigrants. The building later served as a bathing pavilion before becoming a museum.

Inside, small displays include miniature houses, an old Ericsson telephone without a dial, rifle musk and Griffin stamps. The collection is modest in scale, so these individual objects are easy to include in a brief visit.
