Maungauika / North Head Historic Reserve in Devonport, Auckland, combines coastal defence history with walking tracks and views over the Waitematā Harbour and Hauraki Gulf. Explore the historic tunnels, gun emplacements and old batteries, then follow the paths toward rocky coves and beaches. The reserve is free to enter and makes a rewarding half-day outing, whether you come for the military history, a hillside picnic or a walk above the water. The climb can be steep in places, so choose the paved road or a trail to reach the summit.

A coastal defence site on Maungauika

Maungauika has a long history of Māori occupation and later became a coastal defence site. Its military installations were built across nearly 120 years, and the reserve preserves tunnels, gun emplacements, batteries and other fortifications. The site’s position above the harbour and gulf gave it strategic value, as well as broad views over the water and Auckland.

The fortifications were intended to defend the coast, including against fears of a Tsarist Russian invasion. The artillery was never fired in combat. Today, the surviving structures and paths let you explore the site at your own pace.

Exploring the tunnels and tracks

A self-guided walk takes you through parts of the tunnel network and past military structures. Numbered descriptions and orange markers help identify features along the way. Not every tunnel is accessible, so plan to explore the open sections rather than expecting to walk through the whole complex. A torch or phone light is useful in the dark passages.

The reserve also has hilly paths, rocky outcrops and routes down toward beaches and coves. You can reach the summit by trail or by a paved road that is for pedestrians. Some paths are steep, making the walk more demanding in places; allow time if you want to cover both the historic features and the coastline.

Getting there from Devonport

North Head is in Devonport, with a scenic walk of about 20 minutes from the ferry terminal. The approach gives you views of the harbour and Auckland skyline before the climb up to the reserve. Once there, a picnic on the hillside is an easy way to pause between the tunnels and walking routes.

Bring water for your visit. The reserve covers enough ground for a half-day outing, especially if you want to explore the military remains, follow trails and descend toward the shore.
