At 328 metres, the Sky Tower is one of Auckland’s defining landmarks, rising above the CBD on Victoria Street West. Its three viewing levels give you a 360-degree look over the city, harbours and Hauraki Gulf, with distant islands and volcanic cones visible on clear days. Glass-fronted lifts carry you up, and glass floor panels add a vertiginous view straight down. Stay through sunset to see the skyline change as the city lights come on, or add a meal at the revolving Orbit restaurant.

Auckland from above

Sky Tower
Sky Tower

The Sky Tower rises 328 metres above Auckland’s CBD. Completed in 1997, it is a telecommunications and observation tower, as well as part of the SkyCity entertainment complex. Its height gives you a clear sense of the city’s layout: look across the central skyline, harbour waters, volcanic cones and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf.

The observation levels sit at different heights. The Main Observation level is 186 metres above street level, The Lookout is at 192 metres, and the Sky Deck reaches 220 metres. The Sky Deck is the highest public observation level. Visit more than one to take in the changing angles across the city.

The lift and viewing levels

Glass-fronted lifts take you up the tower, with views opening out as you rise. At the observation levels, floor-to-ceiling windows give you a broad panorama in every direction. Glass floor panels let you look down toward the ground below, an optional thrill for anyone comfortable with heights.

On a clear day, views can extend for up to 80 kilometres. The outlook takes in Auckland’s built-up centre and the wider harbour setting, including islands in the Hauraki Gulf. A visit around sunset gives you time to see the view in daylight, then watch the city lights appear after dark.

SkyWalk, SkyJump and dining

For an outdoor view, the SkyWalk takes you around the tower’s exterior, high above the city. SkyJump is a separate, harnessed descent from the tower. These activities add a more physical element to a visit focused otherwise on the indoor viewing levels.

Orbit is the tower’s revolving restaurant, positioned above the main viewing level. It completes a full turn in an hour, so the outlook changes as you dine. The tower also has a café and bar. If you want to combine a meal with the observation decks, check the current dining and admission arrangements before you go, as the information provided here does not confirm whether a restaurant booking includes entry.
