Holy Trinity Cathedral

Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main church of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland. Its story began in 1843, when Bishop George Selwyn bought land for a large church. The cathedral was formally made a cathedral on 28 October 2017, 174 years after the land was purchased.

The building is described as a Pacific-Gothic cathedral. Its contemporary architecture gives the interior a different character from St Mary’s, the wooden church beside it. St Mary’s was built in 1897 and moved across the road in 1982 to stand next to the cathedral.

The stained-glass windows combine Māori designs with Christian imagery and tell the Christian story. Take time to look closely at the windows and up toward the high ceilings. The cathedral also has a large organ with 5,000 pipes.

The building can hold 1,250 people. Its scale is especially clear during concerts, when the seating and music bring the height of the interior into focus. The organ is another reason to visit when it is being played; the instrument has a distinctive sound in the cathedral.

Concerts and visiting

Holy Trinity Cathedral hosts candlelit concerts, including programmes featuring tributes to contemporary bands and film composers. For these events, battery-operated candles are arranged around the stage and seating rows. Musicians perform live, and event staff guide concertgoers to their seats.

Concert organisers may ask audiences to silence phones and wait until the final song before taking photos or videos. Follow the instructions given at the event. Daylight can still enter during earlier performances, so the candlelight effect may be less pronounced than at a later concert.

The cathedral is at 446 Parnell Road. Public access can be affected by rehearsals, so check the cathedral’s current visitor information before making a special trip. A visitor has reported free entry for a church visit; concert tickets may have separate requirements.
