Its 17 hectares bring New Zealand wildlife and animals from around the world together, with space to explore at your own pace. Te Wao Nui is a highlight: its habitats introduce native birds, reptiles and other wildlife. A zoo with a focus on wildlife care

Auckland Zoo

Auckland Zoo opened in 1922 and is a not-for-profit organisation with a focus on animal care, conservation and research. Its grounds cover 17 hectares in Western Springs, west of central Auckland. The zoo is home to native New Zealand wildlife as well as animals from other parts of the world.

As you walk between habitats, look out for animals such as elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, tigers and red pandas, along with birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. The grounds also have shaded areas and places to sit, so you can take breaks between exhibits. Cafes are located around the zoo.

Te Wao Nui and New Zealand wildlife

Te Wao Nui focuses on New Zealand’s plants and animals. The area is arranged into six ecological zones: Coast, Islands, Wetlands, Night, Forest and High Country. Together, they cover habitats from coastal wildlife to native forest birds and high-country species.

The Night zone includes kiwi, frogs, native owls and wētā. Since kiwi are nocturnal, their enclosure is darkened to let you view them in conditions suited to their activity. The High Country zone includes kea, New Zealand’s native alpine parrots. In the Forest zone, visitors can walk among birds in an aviary. Give yourself time in this part of the zoo if native wildlife is a priority.

Talks, feeding times and planning your route

Keeper talks and feeding sessions add context to the animals you see. The schedule can include talks about native wildlife and feeding times for animals such as orangutans. Check what is happening on the day and plan your route around the activities you most want to attend.

The zoo’s paths link its different areas, so you can explore at your own pace. A leisurely visit can take four to five hours, particularly if you stop for talks, food and breaks. Some animals can be harder to spot, so allow time rather than expecting to see every species on a quick walk through.

The WildZone Gift Shop sells souvenirs, books, clothing and children’s toys. The zoo also has a playground, and the wider Western Springs area gives families space to take a break. If you are driving, note that parking is paid and can be limited. Advance ticket booking is recommended.
