Jewish Museum

Amsterdam’s Jewish Museum sits in the former Jewish quarter, inside a complex of historic Ashkenazic synagogues.

Amsterdam’s Jewish Museum sits in the former Jewish quarter, inside a complex of historic Ashkenazic synagogues. Its exhibitions trace Jewish religion, culture and daily life in the Netherlands through objects, art, films and interactive displays. The Jewish Museum junior adds a child-focused route through a Jewish family home, with activities about customs and food. A visit also connects with other sites in the Jewish Cultural Quarter, including the Portuguese Synagogue. Allow a few hours to explore, and use the free audio guide for added context.

A museum in former synagogues

The Jewish Museum is housed in a complex of four historic Ashkenazic synagogues. The buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries and now hold exhibitions on Jewish history, religion and culture in the Netherlands. Their setting links the displays to Amsterdam’s former Jewish quarter and its history.

Exhibitions cover Jewish life across the centuries, from religious traditions and ceremonial objects to stories of the community in Amsterdam. You can see art, utensils, photographs and films, alongside interactive and audiovisual displays. The material also addresses the history of Jewish enterprise and its role in the Dutch economy.

Exhibitions and the audio guide

The exhibitions combine objects with personal and historical narratives. Films and three-dimensional presentations add different ways to engage with the material. A free audio guide is available to give context as you explore.

A section in the basement focuses on the future. Look for it as you move through the museum; it is an additional stop beyond the historical displays. The exhibitions also explore the experiences of Jews in the Netherlands during the Second World War.

A visit with children

The Jewish Museum junior is designed around a Jewish family home. Its rooms introduce children to elements of Jewish culture, including food customs. Activities include baking small challah rolls, learning Hebrew and practising tunes.

The museum is part of Amsterdam’s Jewish Cultural Quarter, which also includes the Portuguese Synagogue, the Hollandsche Schouwburg and the National Holocaust Museum. The Portuguese Synagogue is a historic site that remains in use. Check the Jewish Cultural Quarter’s current ticket details if you plan to visit several sites.
