Park Frankendael is a public green space in Amsterdam Oost, set on the grounds of the city’s last surviving country estate from the 17th century. Its paths wind past ponds, flower and herb gardens, wooded corners and allotment plots, with open lawns for picnics and a play area for children. Look for the historic house, school gardens and waterbirds along the way. De Kas, a restaurant in a former greenhouse, is inside the park; there is also a kiosk for coffee, juice, ice cream and toasties.

A country estate in Amsterdam Oost

Park Frankendael occupies the grounds of a country estate built in the late 17th century. Wealthy Amsterdam residents once built summer retreats in Watergraafsmeer, then reclaimed land beyond the city. Frankendael is the last of these estates to survive within Amsterdam.

The grounds are open to the public. The historic house, Huize Frankendael, preserves the estate’s connection to that earlier landscape. Its ornamented entrance gate and old-house character offer a glimpse of the property’s past.

Gardens, paths and ponds

The park is divided into areas with different garden styles, including flower meadows, a herb garden and allotment plots. A water garden and ponds draw waterbirds, while paths pass through trees and planted spaces. Benches provide places to pause along the way.

The allotment area is a pleasant place to stroll, and the school gardens give local primary schoolchildren space to grow plants. The park’s varied paths also suit a walk, jog or cycle.

A visit with children

Families can use the children’s play area and the children’s gardens. Look up at the disused chimney near the play area: a crane nests on top. There is also a dog park, open lawns for picnics and space to spend time outdoors.

Food in the park

De Kas is a restaurant in a former city greenhouse within the park. Merkelbach is another restaurant on the grounds, with a garden where you can sit on a bench without going into the restaurant. A kiosk sells toasties, ice cream, coffee and juice.

A park walk can fit before a meal reservation or a casual stop at the kiosk. Monthly food markets are also held in the park, so check for an event during your visit.
