ARTIS

ARTIS is Amsterdam’s historic zoo in the Plantage neighbourhood, at Plantage Kerklaan 38-40.

ARTIS is Amsterdam’s historic zoo in the Plantage neighbourhood, at Plantage Kerklaan 38-40. Founded in 1838, it brings animal habitats, botanical gardens and older buildings together in a leafy park setting. Look for animals including lions, giraffes, elephants, penguins and lemurs, then explore indoor attractions such as the butterfly pavilion, planetarium and Micropia, its microbe museum. A visit combines wildlife and nature with a glimpse of the city’s history, and the grounds also have playgrounds for children.

A zoo with a long history

ARTIS
ARTIS

ARTIS opened in 1838 in Amsterdam’s Plantage neighbourhood. Its name refers to Natura Artis Magistra, meaning nature is the teacher of art. The grounds combine animal habitats and garden paths with historic structures, including an aquarium building dating from 1882 and a library built in 1867. Across the park, 27 historically significant bridges, buildings and ponds have been used as animal enclosures since its early years.

The setting gives a visit a different pace from a walk through a conventional museum. Paths pass through green spaces and past older architecture, with animals and exhibits spread across the grounds. ARTIS is in the city, but its gardens provide a change of scene from Amsterdam’s streets.

Animals and habitats

The animal collection includes more than 900 species. Animals named among the park’s inhabitants include elephants, giraffes, lions, jaguars, gorillas, penguins, reptiles and lemurs. Habitats include an African savannah and tropical rainforest, alongside spaces for primates and other animals. Some parts of the grounds are heavily planted, so an animal may not always be easy to spot from the path.

The butterfly pavilion is a warm indoor stop where butterflies fly among the plants. The sea lion pool has an underwater viewing tunnel, giving you a view of the animals swimming below the surface. The petting zoo is another option for families with children.

Indoor attractions

ARTIS has several indoor spaces to add to a visit, especially when the weather turns wet. The planetarium runs shows, while the aquarium includes marine exhibits and a view of Amsterdam’s canals from underwater. Micropia focuses on microscopic life, a world that is usually invisible without magnification. The grounds also include a zoological museum and an insectarium.

Availability can change when areas are being renovated, so check the current information before planning your route around a particular exhibit. Micropia has been listed as requiring a separate ticket, so confirm whether it is included in your admission.

Planning your visit

ARTIS is at Plantage Kerklaan 38-40. Allow around two to three hours to see a selection of the animals, gardens and indoor attractions; a longer visit gives you more time to explore. Families can break up the walk at the playgrounds, and the café provides a place to pause.

Buying tickets in advance is recommended. Student tickets have been reported at around €15 online, but prices can change, so check the current rates before booking. If you prefer a calmer visit, aim for an off-peak time. On rainy days, prioritise the planetarium and other indoor spaces, then return to the gardens if the weather clears.
