Amsterdam Forest, or Amsterdamse Bos, is a woodland park in Amstelveen on the southern edge of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Forest, or Amsterdamse Bos, is a woodland park in Amstelveen on the southern edge of Amsterdam. Its roughly 1,000 hectares include woods, meadows, waterways and paths for walking and cycling. Rent a bike to cover more ground, or slow down by the water with a picnic. You can also go boating or kayaking, visit the goat farm De Ridammerhoeve, and find play areas for children. The scenery and wildlife change with the seasons, so the forest has a different feel throughout the year.

A forest built for recreation

Amsterdamse Bos, whose name means Amsterdam Forest, lies mainly in Amstelveen, on the southern edge of Amsterdam. At about 1,000 hectares, it is a broad mix of woodland, meadows, waterways and open space. Walking and cycling paths cross the park, giving you room to choose between a short outing and a longer day outdoors.

The forest was laid out in the 1930s, with construction also providing work during a period of unemployment. Today, its paths and varied terrain draw people on foot, by bike and on horseback. You will also find areas for picnics and play, as well as sports facilities.

Cycling is a practical way to see more of the park. The network of paths is extensive, so plan your route and take care at junctions. If you prefer to walk, shaded trails and waterside spots make it easy to pause along the way. The park is large enough that a longer walk can take much of the day.

Waterways offer another way to explore. Boating and kayaking are among the activities available, and a stop by the water can break up a walk or ride. The Bosbaan is a rowing course within the forest. Bring a picnic if you want to settle in for a longer visit, or use the park’s play areas if you are exploring with children.

Farm visits and changing seasons

De Ridammerhoeve, the goat farm in the forest, is a family-friendly stop where you can see goats and other farm animals. It adds a more hands-on option to a day spent among the trails and open spaces.

The scenery changes through the year. Spring brings fresh growth, summer turns the park green, and autumn adds colour to the trees. Winter has a quieter, barer woodland feel. An early start can make for a more peaceful walk or ride before the park gets busier.
