Pashupatinath Temple

Pashupatinath Temple is a major Hindu pilgrimage site on the banks of the Bagmati River in eastern Kathmandu.

Pashupatinath Temple is a major Hindu pilgrimage site on the banks of the Bagmati River in eastern Kathmandu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, its sprawling grounds bring together pagoda-style shrines, courtyards and ashrams. Look for the main temple’s gilded roof, carved wooden details and silver doors, then spend time by the river, where religious rites and cremation ceremonies take place. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple courtyard, but other areas of the complex are open to visitors.

A sacred complex by the Bagmati

Pashupatinath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is among the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in Nepal. The complex extends along the Bagmati River on Kathmandu’s eastern side, with temples, shrines, ashrams and courtyards across the grounds. The wider precinct has developed over centuries and is part of the Kathmandu Valley’s UNESCO cultural heritage designation.

The main temple is built in the Nepalese pagoda style. Its gilded roof, silver doors and carved wooden details distinguish it from the smaller sacred structures nearby. The complex is more than a single building, so allow time to walk around its different areas and take in the variety of shrines and religious sites.

Access and religious practice

The main temple courtyard is reserved for Hindus. Visitors who cannot enter can still explore areas of the complex that are open to them and view the temple’s exterior. Treat the grounds as an active place of worship: move quietly around ceremonies and show care when observing people at prayer.

Religious rites take place beside the Bagmati, including cremation ceremonies. These are significant family and religious events, so observe from a respectful distance and avoid treating them as a spectacle. A face mask may be useful if you are sensitive to smoke or strong smells.

Rituals by the river and festival days

The riverbanks are a place to see ceremonies associated with the temple. An evening Aarti is held at about 7:00 PM, while an early-morning visit is a good choice for seeing rituals and avoiding some of the crowds.

Maha Shivaratri is one of the temple’s major festivals, drawing large numbers of devotees who gather to honour Lord Shiva. Expect the site to be especially busy on this occasion. If you prefer a quieter visit, choose a regular morning instead.
