Kathmandu Durbar Square is a historic palace and temple complex in old Kathmandu, known locally as Hanuman Dhoka or Basantapur. Its courtyards, stone pagodas and carved wooden details show Newari architecture and Nepal’s royal history. Look for Hanuman Dhoka Palace, Kumari Ghar and the square’s temples; a museum is also housed here. The UNESCO World Heritage site remains part of everyday city life, with local activity around its historic buildings. Entry fees apply to foreign visitors in some areas, so check access before you set out.

“Durbar” means royal palace, and this square was once the centre of Nepal’s kings’ rule. The historic complex includes Hanuman Dhoka, the former royal palace, alongside temples, courtyards and statues. Its carved wooden details and stone pagodas are among the defining features of the area.

The square is also known as Hanuman Dhoka or Basantapur. It is one of three historic durbar squares in Kathmandu and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Restoration work has continued following the 2015 earthquake.

Kumari Ghar is the home of the Living Goddess Kumari. Taleju Temple stands beside Hanuman Dhoka Palace and is open to the public on the ninth day of Dashain, so do not expect to enter it on an ordinary visit. Museum displays are another part of the complex.

The square is an open public area, but access to parts of the heritage zone can involve a ticket. Foreign visitors may be charged for entry to certain areas, and tickets in advance are recommended. The nearby lanes and side temples add more places to explore beyond the main square.
