Chișinău in 2 days: boulevard, museums and a wine or Orheiul Vechi day

Kurz gesagt

Spend day one on foot in the center: the statue of Stephen the Great, the City Hall, the Water Tower and one museum, with a park in the afternoon. Use day two for one underground cellar or for Orheiul Vechi, which the national tourism portal places 45 to 50 minutes from the capital. Do not add Transnistria, which FCDO advises against.

Chișinău in 2 days at a glance

Two days is the right length for Chișinău if you want the capital and one trip beyond it. The Chișinău travel guide lists what the city offers, and the Moldova overview shows how it fits a longer route. This plan puts the compact center on day one, on foot, and gives day two to an underground cellar or to Orheiul Vechi, the two things that make Moldova feel different from its neighbors.

The logic is simple. The center is small enough to walk, and the museums, parks and the main boulevard sit close together. Cellars and the cave monastery sit outside the city and need a driver or a tour, so they get their own day. If you can add a third day, use it for the second of those two. If you have only one, pick by weather: cellars in cold or wet weather, Orheiul Vechi when the sky is clear.

Who should not follow this plan as written? Visitors who want to see Transnistria, which FCDO advises against visiting at all, and visitors who plan to drive themselves after a tasting. Both are covered below.

Day 1: the center on foot

Start on Stefan cel Mare Boulevard, the city's main street. The Visit Chisinau pages describe a statue of Stephen the Great and Holy, made in 1925 to 1928 by the sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală, set in the park of the same name and inaugurated on 29 April 1928. It is the most recognizable meeting point in the city and a reasonable place to start. The same pages list the Chișinău City Hall, built in the early twentieth century to a design by Mitrofan Elladi under the direction of the architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, and the Water Tower of 1892, also a Bernardazzi project, which now houses the Museum of the City of Chișinău. Both are architecture and history monuments of national importance.

Allow the middle of the morning for one museum. The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History was created in October 1889 from the collection of the first agricultural exhibition in Bessarabia, and its building was put up for the museum at the start of the twentieth century. It is a good choice if you want one indoor stop that explains the country, but opening hours and ticket rules change, so check the museum's own page on the day. The Water Tower and its city museum make a shorter alternative, and the tower's setting adds architecture without a long visit.

In the afternoon, go outdoors. Moldova's national tourism portal names Central Park, Valea Morilor and the Stefan cel Mare public garden as the green places to escape the heat or to stroll in autumn, and describes May as the month for walking under lime and acacia blossom. Pick one, sit with a coffee and let the day slow down. If your legs want more, the same portal says the old center holds most of the restaurants, wine bars and cafes, so you do not need a taxi for dinner.

On a weekend, the city runs a sightseeing trolleybus starting at the Triumphal Arch, with an audio guide that covers about 30 sights in an hour. Times and languages are listed on the Visit Chisinau site and have changed between seasons, so check them before you plan around it. It is a good way to see the sights you will not walk to, but it is a bonus, not a must.

Keep your evening flexible. FCDO reports regular small demonstrations in central Chișinău since autumn 2022, generally peaceful and policed, and advises staying away from them. If one is under way on the boulevard, move to a side street for dinner and go back to your room by taxi.

Day 2: a cellar or Orheiul Vechi

Day two is a choice, and the choice depends on weather, interest and who is driving. Cellar days work in any weather, because the cellars are underground. Orheiul Vechi works best on clear days, because the landscape and the walking are the point. Both need transport, and neither is a good idea behind the wheel if you plan to taste wine.

For a cellar day, the two best-known options are Cricova, north of the city, and Mileștii Mici, to the south. The Cricova or Mileștii Mici guide compares them by price, hours, booking and the kind of visit each suits. The short version is that Cricova asks for advance booking by phone, and Mileștii Mici offers shorter visits and online booking. Whichever you choose, book a slot, arrive on time and arrange a driver, because FCDO calls drink-driving a serious offense in Moldova.

If you prefer to see Moldova's countryside, go to Orheiul Vechi, covered next. If you want to do both, a tour that links a morning cellar with an afternoon at the monastery can work, but ask for the schedule in advance, because a tight itinerary leaves little time at either stop.

Orheiul Vechi: the cave monastery trip

Moldova's national tourism portal puts Orheiul Vechi 45 to 50 minutes from Chișinău and describes it as a must for visitors who like history, authentic architecture, scenery and local food. The Răut river winds between cliffs and villages, and the portal names Butuceni and Trebujeni as the villages that have grown most in tourism in recent years. It also describes the Nativity of the Mother of God church and the cave hermitage of the Dormition of the Mother of God, with monastic roots in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and a Soviet-era spell as an open-air museum.

The trip suits travelers who like landscape, short walks and village meals. Guesthouses in the area, according to the portal, can arrange cooking workshops, carriage rides and boat trips on request, and it advises asking in advance. The trip does not suit visitors with limited mobility, because paths around a cliff monastery and a village are uneven, and it does not suit anyone expecting a polished attraction with posted hours. Check the current visiting arrangements before you go, because they are managed by the site and the monastic community.

Getting there is the practical question. Buses are less frequent than the trip needs, so most visitors hire a driver, join a tour or use a taxi booked for the day with an agreed waiting time. FCDO says driving standards are poor, roads are of variable quality and accidents are common, so it advises avoiding driving outside urban areas where possible, particularly at night. Plan to be back in the city before dark.

Rain plan and cold-weather plan

Rain is easy to plan for. On day one, swap the park for a second museum, and use the Water Tower and the ethnography museum as your indoor anchors. On day two, choose the cellar: Cricova says its underground temperature stays between +10 and +12 °C with 97 to 98 percent humidity all year, which is cool in summer and mild in winter. Bring a warm layer in July, and do not wear thin shoes on wet stone.

In winter, the center is cold, with average highs near freezing in January, and the days are short. The city runs a sightseeing trolleybus with winter times and a festive program that the tourism pages announce each year, so check the events calendar for the dates of your trip. Cellars and museums are the natural winter stops, so confirm their hours for your dates and plan for early dusk and uneven, icy pavements.

In the hot weeks of July and August, start early, take the park break in the middle of the day and keep the cellar for the afternoon, when the underground temperature offers a real escape. If you are traveling in early October, check the city events calendar for wine festival days, because crowds and prices can change.

Mistakes to avoid on a two-day trip

The first mistake is adding Transnistria to a short plan. FCDO advises against all travel there, says there is no official border, notes that the de facto authorities run their own checkpoints and migration card, and says its ability to help is extremely limited. Your travel insurance could also be invalidated. The travel insurance guide explains why you should check the wording before you go.

The second mistake is driving to a cellar. Drink-driving is a serious offense, and most tasting packages include several wines. The third is planning on cards only: FCDO says card payment is widespread but not universal, especially outside the capital, and that euros and US dollars in clean notes are the most accepted foreign currencies. Carry some lei for taxis, markets and small cafes.

The fourth is photographing sensitive sites. FCDO warns against taking photos of military and government facilities, including airports and power stations, and says people have been detained or arrested for it. Keep your camera away from official buildings and checkpoints. The last is leaving the paperwork to the airport: FCDO says British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in a 6-month period without a visa and must show a return or onward ticket, and that you should carry a copy of your passport photo page because police checks are frequent. The visas and entry page explains how these rules work across countries. Check the cash rule too: the airport's passenger page says more than 10,000 euros (or equivalent) per person must be declared in writing when you enter or leave, which matters if you carry euros for the cash-only corners. If you do need a visa, the government's e-Visa portal charges 40 euros for a transit or short-stay visa and examines applications within 10 calendar days, extendable to 20, so apply well before you fly. On arrival, public transport line 30 runs from the airport to the center from 06:00 to 22:59 for 7 MDL, which suits a day arrival; after those hours use a taxi.

Once the plan is set, pick your base with where to stay in Chișinău, and get your phone ready with an eSIM for Moldova so that maps, taxi apps and translation work from the first night. For routes beyond the capital, see getting around.

The Moldova guide covers entry, money and the rest of the country.

Häufige Fragen

Is two days enough for Chișinău?

Yes for the capital itself. The City Hall, the Water Tower, the main museums and the parks sit close together, so one day covers them on foot. The second day goes to a winery or Orheiul Vechi, because those are the sights that make the trip distinct.

What should you do in Chișinău on a rainy day?

Go underground or indoors. Cricova states that its cellars stay at a constant +10 to +12 °C with 97 to 98 percent humidity all year, so bring a warm layer. Museums such as the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History and the City Museum are the other wet-day options.

How far is Orheiul Vechi from Chișinău?

Moldova's national tourism portal puts it 45 to 50 minutes from the capital. Buses are less convenient than a driver or a tour, and a guided trip often pairs it with a winery visit if you plan the day in advance.

Can you visit Transnistria as a day trip from Chișinău?

FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria and says its ability to help there is extremely limited, so this plan leaves it out. Your travel insurance could also be invalidated there. Read the current advice before you decide.

What is the best time of year for a two-day Chișinău trip?

May, June, September and early October. The parks are green or golden, the days are long, and cellar days are comfortable. July and August are hot, and winter is cold, but underground wineries and museums still work.
