Puerto Angelito is a small bay in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, on Mexico's Pacific coast. The water is clear and calm, the sand is white, and palapa restaurants line the shore. It is a good base for swimming, snorkeling near the rocks and watching fishing boats come in. Tour boats to the coast leave from here, and the neighbouring Manzanillo beach is a short walk over the rocks.
Where it is and how to get there

Puerto Angelito sits in a sheltered bay in Puerto Escondido, within walking distance of Playa Carrizalillo and the downtown area. A taxi or car can reach the beach directly by the road to Puerto Angelito. Walking from Playa Principal takes about 20 minutes. The beach is about 10 minutes west of El Adoquín.
Manzanillo lies on the other side of a rocky outcrop. It is reached by stairs at the end of Calle 5a Sur, and a small walkway links the two beaches.
The water and the sand

Together, the two beaches stretch for about 120 metres around the bay, with rocks at either end. The sand is white and the water is aquamarine. Near the shore the water is shallow, which gives it a light green-blue tint. The waves are small.
Space on the sand is limited because fishing boats are pulled up here and moored close to the shore. Keep this in mind when you choose a spot to sit.
Snorkeling is one of the main reasons to come. The water is clear, and fish can be seen around the rocks, especially early in the morning. Bring your own mask and snorkel, as there is no need to rent a life vest in the buoyant water.
Boats, food and busy days
Fishing boats come and go throughout the day. Tour boats leave from Puerto Angelito as well as from Playa Principal. Groups of six or more can arrange a tour in person for about 500 pesos per person.
Floats and small boat rides can be rented on the beach. Palapa restaurants and vendors serve food along the sand, and ice cream sellers pass through at times.
The beach is busiest at weekends, when the bay fills with people and boats. Weekday mornings have the most room.
Visiting with children
The bay has calm water and small waves, which suits young children, families and older visitors. Keep children away from the areas where boats are landing or leaving, and stay within the roped-off swimming zone.
