Gran Museo del Mundo Maya

The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya sits in Mérida, a short ride north of the Centro district.

The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya sits in Mérida, a short ride north of the Centro district. It holds more than 1,000 artifacts that trace Maya history from ancient times through the colonial period to Maya culture today. Highlights include a reclining chac-mool sculpture from Chichén Itzá and an underworld figure unearthed at Ek' Balam. The building, which opened in 2012, takes its design from the ceiba tree, which the Maya considered sacred. Allow two to three hours, and read the labels in Mayan, Spanish and English.

The museum opened in 2012 in the north of Mérida, just beyond the Centro district. Its contemporary design takes the ceiba tree as its model, a tree the ancient Maya held sacred. The building's form echoes the tree's shape.

Getting there takes a taxi or a ride-hailing app, since the museum is a little way from the centre. The entrance, the elevator, the restrooms and the parking lot are listed as wheelchair accessible. The site has both a free and a paid parking lot.

The permanent collection holds more than 1,000 pieces. They cover ancient history, the colonial period and contemporary Maya culture. The collection includes textiles, religious objects, archaeological finds, handicrafts and objects from the pre-Hispanic period. The colonial section has engravings, books, and historical, artistic and religious documents.

Several objects stand out. A reclining chac-mool sculpture comes from Chichén Itzá. An underworld figure was unearthed at Ek' Balam and wears a skull belt and a reptile headdress. Other pieces include a wooden carving of a feathered serpent, an incense burner shaped like a corn god, a Catholic devotional piece to the Virgin Mary, and several anthropomorphic clay figurines.

If you plan to visit the ruins, the Chichén Itzá and Ek' Balam pieces give useful context before you go.
