Kurz gesagt

Pick Cozumel for serious diving, a bigger island and a town with more restaurants. Pick Isla Mujeres for Playa Norte's calm, shallow water, an easy ferry from Cancún and a small-island feel you can explore by golf cart. If you are short on time, Isla Mujeres works as a day trip, and Cozumel is better with a night or two.

The quick answer

Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are the two islands most visitors weigh up on a Cancún and Riviera Maya trip, and they suit different travelers. Cozumel is the bigger, more serious diving island, with a proper town and room to spread out. Isla Mujeres is small, easy and close to Cancún, with a calm beach and a golf-cart pace. The Isla Cozumel travel guide and the Isla Mujeres travel guide cover each island in detail, and the Mexico guide covers the rest of Mexico.

If you are a diver, pick Cozumel. If you want a calm swim, a simple day out from Cancún and a small-island evening, pick Isla Mujeres. If you have a week and love islands, do one at the start and one at the end, and read the Isla Holbox guide if you want a car-free third option farther north.

Diving and snorkeling

Cozumel is known for its reef. The island sits along the Mesoamerican reef system, and currents on its western side turn many dives into drift dives, with walls, swim-throughs and large coral formations. If you are certified, or want to learn, Cozumel is the stronger choice, and operators match the dive to your level. Our things to do in Cozumel guide covers the reef in more detail.

Isla Mujeres offers snorkeling and diving too, with reef sites and an underwater sculpture park reached by boat from the island and from Cancún. It is gentler and better for beginners and families, and many trips run in calm, shallow water. Water conditions can vary, so ask your operator about visibility and currents before you book.

Both islands have marine protection rules: do not touch coral, do not stand on it and keep your fins off the bottom. Both also sit inside national marine parks that charge a daily fee. The official CONANP pages list 225 pesos per person per day for the Arrecifes de Cozumel park and 125 pesos for the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc park, with exemptions for children under 12. Whichever you choose, book with a licensed operator, ask whether the park fee is in the price and ask about group size and the safety briefing.

Beaches

Isla Mujeres wins on beaches. Playa Norte is a long, shallow, calm beach with clear water, and it suits families and people who want to swim without a boat. It is also easy to reach from the ferry on foot. Shade is limited, so bring a hat or rent an umbrella from a beach club.

Cozumel's beaches are different. The west coast has beach clubs and sheltered coves with calm water and reef access, and the wild east coast is better for views than for swimming because of the currents. If your main priority is a classic white-sand beach day, Isla Mujeres is easier. If you want to combine beach time with reef time, Cozumel's clubs do both.

Sargassum can affect both islands in some years. Mexico's navy publishes sargassum bulletins for the Caribbean coast, so check recent reports before you travel, and be flexible about which side of the island you use.

Getting there

Isla Mujeres is the easier of the two. Ultramar passenger ferries leave from Puerto Juárez and from two docks in the Cancún hotel zone, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol, and the crossing takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The Playa Caracol fare does not include the dock fee, according to Ultramar. A separate vehicle ferry, run by UltraCarga, crosses from Punta Sam. From Cancún airport, a taxi or bus to the ferry docks takes about 20 to 30 minutes, so you can be on the island within an hour or two of landing.

Cozumel takes more planning. Most visitors take a bus or shuttle from Cancún airport to Playa del Carmen, about an hour, then the passenger ferry to San Miguel, about 30 to 45 minutes. Our Playa del Carmen to Cozumel ferry guide covers tickets, delays and the car question. A few airlines also fly direct to Cozumel, depending on the season.

Both crossings can be canceled in rough weather, so keep a spare day before a flight home, and check your travel insurance for weather delays.

Staying and getting around

Isla Mujeres is compact. Most visitors stay in or near the town, walk to the ferry and the beach, and rent a golf cart for the south point and the west coast. Inspect the cart, photograph any damage and ask what the rental covers. Dinner and sunset are easy, and the pace is slow once the day boats leave.

Cozumel is larger. San Miguel is the town, with restaurants, shops and dive operators, while the hotel zones to the north and south offer resorts and beach clubs. A rental car, taxi or scooter helps you reach the east coast and the south point, and scooters carry more risk, so check the bike and wear a helmet. Taxis use set fares by zone, so ask before you ride.

If you want to stay one night, either works. If you want two or three, Cozumel gives you more to do between dives and beach days. Neither needs more than three nights unless you dive heavily.

Crowds, cruise ships and cost

Cozumel is a cruise port, and on busy days several ships can be in at once. The waterfront, the main beach clubs and some reef sites fill through the middle of the day, and then the town relaxes. Isla Mujeres also gets day visitors from Cancún, and its busiest hours are around midday, when the ferries and tour boats arrive. In both cases, the evening is the quiet time, and a night on the island changes the experience.

On cost, neither island is a bargain, and prices depend on the season and the type of stay. The crossing itself is a fair comparison: on 1 October 2026 Ultramar listed an adult tourist ticket to Cozumel at 320 pesos one way and 640 round trip, and a standard adult ticket from Puerto Juárez to Isla Mujeres at 290 one way and 580 round trip. Add the park fee and, for foreign tourists, Quintana Roo's Visitax, which applies on both islands and is paid once on the state's portal. Cozumel has more hotel choice, from simple town rooms to large resorts, and dive trips add up if you do several. Isla Mujeres has fewer large hotels and more small guesthouses and mid-range places, and a day trip from Cancún keeps costs down because you avoid a night's room. Check current rates for your dates, and compare a guided day trip with a do-it-yourself ferry day before you decide.

Seasonality is similar. The dry months from about November to April are the most pleasant and the most expensive. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the US National Hurricane Center puts the busiest stretch between mid-August and mid-October, so flexible bookings and travel insurance matter. If you want fewer people, go midweek and early in the day on either island.

Which island if... decision rules

Use the facts that cannot change. If you hold a dive certification and want more than one dive day, choose Cozumel, because the reef and the number of operators are the reason the island exists. If you cannot swim well or travel with small children, choose Isla Mujeres, where Playa Norte stays shallow and the ferry is short. If you have only one free day and are staying in Cancún, choose Isla Mujeres, since it saves the road to Playa del Carmen and a longer crossing. If you are staying in Playa del Carmen, the reverse is true: Cozumel is the island on your doorstep.

The tie-breaker is money and time. A day on Cozumel from Playa del Carmen costs a little more in fares and park fees, and a night there lets you dive early and avoid the crowd. A day on Isla Mujeres costs less in fares and park fees and can be done from Cancún without an overnight.

Skip Isla Mujeres if your whole reason for going is serious diving. Skip Cozumel if you want a quiet beach evening on a small island you can cross in a golf cart. For a third choice with no cars at all, see the Isla Holbox guide.

Sample plans

For a two-night island stop on a longer Caribbean coast trip, Cozumel gives you a reef day and a loop day. Take the ferry from Playa del Carmen in the morning, dive or snorkel on day one, drive or taxi the island on day two and leave in the afternoon. The Cozumel guide has the practical details.

For a day out from Cancún, Isla Mujeres is the better choice. Take an early ferry, rent a golf cart for the south point, swim at Playa Norte and have a seafood lunch before heading back. If you stay a night, you get the island to yourself in the evening and the early morning, which is when it is at its best.

For a week on the coast, a good pattern is a few days on the mainland, a night or two on one island and the rest in a quieter place such as Holbox or Bacalar. The Isla Mujeres guide and the Holbox guide show how the options line up.

Who should pick which?

Pick Cozumel if you dive or want to learn, if you like a larger island with a proper town and if you are staying two or more nights. It suits couples, groups of friends and families who want variety, and it fills on cruise days, so plan around the ships.

Pick Isla Mujeres if you want a calm beach, a day trip from Cancún and a small-island evening you can do by golf cart. It suits families with young children, beach-first travelers and anyone with limited time.

If you cannot decide, base yourself in Cancún or Playa del Carmen and do both as day trips on separate days. The Playa del Carmen guide shows how that coast works as a base, and the Cancún travel guide covers the airport side.

Häufige Fragen

Is Cozumel or Isla Mujeres better for snorkeling?

Both have good snorkeling. Cozumel has the stronger reef and drift diving, while Isla Mujeres has calm, shallow water and easy boat trips. Choose Cozumel if the reef is your main reason, and Isla Mujeres for a relaxed, beginner-friendly day.

Which island has better beaches?

Isla Mujeres, for a calm, shallow beach at Playa Norte. Cozumel's best swimming is at beach clubs and sheltered coves on the west side, while the wild east coast is usually not for swimming.

Which island is easier to reach?

Isla Mujeres, from Cancún, with a short ferry of about 20 to 30 minutes from Puerto Juárez or the hotel zone docks. Cozumel needs a trip to Playa del Carmen and a ferry of about 30 to 45 minutes, or a flight.

Which island is better for a day trip?

Isla Mujeres from Cancún, since the crossing is short and the island is compact. A Cozumel day trip from Playa del Carmen works, but travel time eats into your day, so a night is worth it.

Can you visit both islands on one trip?

Yes, but they are on opposite sides of the Cancún and Playa del Carmen corridor, so budget a day to move between them. Do one at the start of your trip and one at the end, or choose a single island and spend longer.

  1. Expanded. Checked ferry fares and the Isla Mujeres departure points on the Ultramar site, the vehicle ferry on the UltraCarga site, both marine park fees on the CONANP pages, the Visitax rule on the state portal and the hurricane season dates on the US National Hurricane Center site. Crossing times are approximate; operators do not publish them on the pages checked.
