Kurz gesagt

Stay in the Old Town for a first trip, because the main sights are on foot and bus 22 from the airport stops beside it. Choose the Art Nouveau district for calmer evenings, the station and market area for early trains and Jūrmala, and Āgenskalns on the left bank for a longer, more local stay.

How to choose a base in Riga

Riga is a flat, walkable capital on the right bank of the Daugava, and most visitors never need more than a few tram stops. The Riga travel guide covers what to see, and this page settles where to sleep as part of a wider Latvia trip. For most first visits the answer is the Old Town, with the Art Nouveau district as the calmer alternative and the station area as the practical one.

Three questions decide the choice. The first is how you arrive. LiveRiga describes bus 22 as the main daytime link between the airport and the center, about 40 minutes depending on traffic, with stops at Grēcinieku iela beside the Old Town and at Autoosta next to the international bus station and a short walk from Riga Central Railway Station. A night bus, the N22, runs hourly after the regular service ends. The second is how much evening noise you can tolerate, since the Old Town keeps its terraces and bars busy late. The third is what your days are made of: medieval churches and squares call for the Old Town, while Art Nouveau facades and a quieter street call for the district a short walk north.

UNESCO treats all of this as one property. Its listing for the Historic Centre of Riga covers the medieval core on the right bank, the semicircle of boulevards around it, the 19th-century wooden suburbs and the Art Nouveau streets, and it describes the whole as holding the finest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture in the world. That helps with a practical point: whichever of the first three bases you pick, you are sleeping inside the historic center.

Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple hotel or guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel or apartment-style stay, $$$ an upscale hotel. No exact rates are quoted because they move with the season, so check the final price, including any local tax, when you book.

The Old Town is the base that makes every other plan easier. LiveRiga calls it the oldest part of the capital, with Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, many of them cultural monuments, and a large number of restaurants, cafés and bars. The Dome Cathedral, St. Peter's Church and the House of the Blackheads on Town Hall Square all sit within a few minutes of one another, so a hotel here turns a two-day visit into a series of short walks with a hotel break in the middle.

St. Peter's is a good example of how the location pays off. Its official site lists opening hours of 10:00 to 18:00, with 10:00 to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, which makes the church tower a realistic late-evening stop when your room is a few minutes away. The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, at Latviešu strēlnieku laukums 1, also lists daily hours of 10:00 to 18:00 and sits at the edge of the Old Town, so a morning there needs no tram at all.

The trade-offs are noise, crowds and size. LiveRiga notes that the Old Town turns into a social hub by evening, with wine bars, cocktail lounges and late-night restaurants, and FCDO lists the Old Town among the places where bag snatching and pickpocketing are a greater risk, alongside some reports of tourists charged high prices for drinks. Rooms in historic buildings can be compact, and some properties have no lift. Ask for an upper floor or a courtyard side, check recent guest comments about noise, and confirm the price of every drink before you order in a bar you do not know.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you need a silent street after midnight. The Art Nouveau district is calmer and still within walking distance.

2. Art Nouveau district

The Art Nouveau district, known as the Quiet Centre, lies about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Old Town. LiveRiga describes entire streets lined with ornate facades from the early 1900s, with Alberta iela as the highlight: it was built in just seven years, between 1901 and 1908, and eight of its houses are recognized as monuments of national significance. Elizabetes iela 10b, one of Mikhail Eisenstein's most dramatic buildings, is nearby, and LiveRiga says nearly a third of the city center was built in this style.

Alberta Iela, Rīga

Staying here means waking up among the facades instead of walking to them. The Riga Art Nouveau Centre, at Alberta iela 12, is a museum in the former private house of the architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns. Its official site lists the whole exposition at €5.00 in the winter season, from 1 October to 30 April, and €9.00 from 1 May to 30 September, with hours of 10:00 to 18:00 and tickets sold until 17:45. Check the museum's open days before you plan around it.

The district also works for evenings. LiveRiga says many of the buildings host eateries, bars, shops and galleries, so you can eat without walking back to the medieval core, and the streets are calmer after dark. The cost is a short walk or tram ride to the Old Town each morning, and a thinner choice of lodging than the center offers, so book a room with a facade view well ahead for summer weekends. It is the base to choose if architecture is the reason you came.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you want medieval lanes and a church spire at the door. The Old Town gives you that without a walk.

Choose this district if architecture is the reason you came.

3. Station and Central Market

Best for
Early trains, Jūrmala, coaches
Airport bus
Bus 22, Autoosta stop
To the Old Town
About 5 min on foot
Price band
$–$$

The area around Riga Central Station suits travelers whose trip depends on a departure time. LiveRiga puts the Old Town about five minutes on foot from the station, and the Central Market, in former zeppelin hangars, sits next to the central train and bus stations. Trains to Jūrmala leave from the station, which makes this the best base for the day trip described in Jūrmala from Riga, and the Riga Central Bus Terminal houses a Lux Express service office that LiveRiga lists as open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for coaches to Tallinn, Vilnius and Warsaw.

The market is a real asset for a self-catering stay. It is open daily from 07:00 to 18:00, with five pavilions of fresh produce, smoked fish and rye bread, and a food court, but the pavilions close on the first Monday of every month for a sanitary day. For airport trips, the N22 night bus leaves from the Stacijas laukums stop on Marijas iela, which helps with a very early flight.

The area is a transport hub rather than a place to linger, and FCDO names the central train and bus stations and the Central Market among the places where petty theft is a greater risk. Keep your bag zipped and in front of you, avoid unlit streets and parks at night, and use the hotel safe for passports and spare cards. The upside is price: this is usually where you find the simpler, cheaper rooms within walking distance of the Old Town.

Nicht geeignet, wenn atmosphere matters more than a short transfer. The Old Town and the Art Nouveau district have far more character after dark.

A good pick for the cheapest rooms within walking distance of the Old Town.

4. Āgenskalns

Best for
Longer, local stays

Cross the river
Price band
$–$$

Āgenskalns is the left-bank neighborhood to consider if you have more than three nights or have been to Riga before. Its market has been open since 1898, is the largest and oldest on the left bank, has the status of a national cultural monument and reopened in May 2022 after a renovation that ran from 2018, according to LiveRiga. It is a lively mix of local produce and street food and a long way from the souvenir shops of the Old Town.

The left bank also gives you the view that UNESCO highlights: the medieval core and its church towers seen across the Daugava, with a skyline in which only the spires rise above low historic buildings. The National Library of Latvia, the Castle of Light by Gunārs Birkerts, opened in 2014 on the left bank opposite the Old Town, and the Riga Rise Observation Wheel, 65 meters high, opened there in April 2025.

The price of living across the river is time. Every sight on the right bank needs a tram, bus or a walk over a bridge, and your day starts later than it would in the center. Public transport runs from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., so check the last ride home before a late dinner, and remember that night buses run only on some routes. For a two-day city break this base is the wrong tradeoff; for a week, it is a pleasant change.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you have two days and want to walk everywhere. Any of the first three bases will save you transit time.

For a stay of a week, Āgenskalns is a pleasant change from the center.

Quick picks by traveler type

First-timers who want to walk everywhere: the Old Town. Architecture fans and couples who prefer a calm street at night: the Art Nouveau district. Travelers with an early train, a Jūrmala day or a coach to Vilnius or Tallinn: the station area. Longer stays and repeat visitors: Āgenskalns. Visitors on a tight budget: compare the station area first, then Āgenskalns, then the Old Town on a weekday, and check the total price rather than the headline rate.

Families have no perfect base. The Old Town keeps everything close for short legs, while the station area makes train days easy. If a zoo or a seaside day is part of the plan, sleep near the station and let the train do the work. Solo travelers who plan to be out late will usually feel better in the Old Town or the Art Nouveau district than on the quiet side of the station after dark, since FCDO advises taking extra care and being wary of people who approach you.

Choosing by season and length of stay

One night works best in the Old Town, because you arrive, see the squares at dusk and leave after a morning at St. Peter's or the market. Two nights suit the Old Town or the Art Nouveau district, as laid out in Riga in 2 days. Three or more nights allow a change of base, or a split between the center and a day by the sea.

Freedom Monument, Rīga: a stone monument with a group of people on it
Freedom Monument, Rīga

The calendar matters. FCDO warns that Latvian winters, from October to March, can be extremely cold, with temperatures that may fall to minus 25°C or below and snow that can delay public transport. In that season a base within walking distance of your sights is worth more than a lower rate across the river. Summer is the opposite: the long days make a terrace in the Old Town attractive, and the Jāņi midsummer holiday on 23 and 24 June closes some attractions. The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, for example, lists both days among its closing dates. December brings Latvian Christmas events such as the Log Night in Old Riga on 21 December, according to LiveRiga, and the Latvian National Opera and Ballet runs its season from September to the end of May.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking a room on a main Old Town square for a summer weekend without checking which side it faces. The second is choosing the station area for atmosphere; it is a transport base and works best when a train time rules the day. The third is picking Āgenskalns for a two-day trip, where the daily crossings add up. The fourth is taking an unmarked taxi from the station: FCDO advises booking through a major company or a registered vehicle with yellow plates, agreeing the approximate price before you set off, and noting that some visitors have reported meters adapted to overcharge.

The last mistake is assuming a car helps. The center is compact, public transport covers the rest and the airport bus is cheap, so a rental car mostly adds parking questions. If your plan includes Jūrmala or Sigulda, trains are the simpler way to go.

Booking tips for Riga

Book early for the midsummer week, for Riga's birthday celebrations on 14 August, which LiveRiga lists as an annual event, and for the December markets. If your dates are flexible, May and September offer long daylight or crisp weather with easier availability, and Sunday to Thursday nights are usually cheaper than weekends. Check whether breakfast is included and confirm the total price, with any local tax, before you pay. The guide to tourist taxes in Europe explains how such charges usually appear on a bill, and the Europe eSIM roundup compares data plans so your maps and ticket apps work from the airport.

Once your base is set, plan the days with Riga in 2 days. If Riga is one stop on a Baltic loop, Vilnius is the usual next capital, and the Estonia guide covers the northern end of the route. Riga is inside Schengen, so non-EU visitors should read EES explained and check whether the Latvian travel declaration applies to their passport.

Compare options in the travel insurance guide, and check entry rules for your passport in the visa checker before you book.

Häufige Fragen

What is the best area to stay in Riga for first-timers?

The Old Town. The Dome, St. Peter's and the House of the Blackheads are within a few minutes of each other, and LiveRiga puts the Old Town about five minutes on foot from Riga Central Station. The trade-off is evening noise, so ask for a courtyard side.

Is it better to stay in the Old Town or the Art Nouveau district?

Choose the Old Town for medieval lanes and late evenings, and the Art Nouveau district for facades, quieter streets and a 10 to 15 minute walk back to the sights. Both are inside the UNESCO-listed historic center.

Is it safe to stay near Riga Central Station?

It is practical, but FCDO lists the central train and bus stations, the Central Market and the Old Town as places where bag snatching and pickpocketing are a greater risk. Keep valuables in the hotel safe and your bag zipped.

How do I get from the airport to a hotel in Riga?

Bus 22 runs by day and the N22 night bus hourly from 00:30 to 04:30, per LiveRiga. Daytime stops include Grēcinieku iela beside the Old Town and Autoosta near the bus terminal and station. A taxi is quicker with bags.

Is Āgenskalns a good place to stay in Riga?

It suits longer stays and repeat visitors who like a local market and a river view of the Old Town skyline. It is a ride away from the sights, so skip it on a two-day trip.
