Tokyo Station Gallery sits inside the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station, by the North Exit, and pairs rotating art exhibitions with the station building’s exposed red brick. Shows span modern and contemporary art, railways, architecture and design, with around four to five exhibitions each year. The preserved brickwork and steel beams give the galleries a distinct setting, while displays can also explore Tokyo Station’s history. It is an easy indoor stop between trains or shopping, with a gallery shop for souvenirs.

Tokyo Station Gallery is in the Marunouchi Station Building, close to the Marunouchi North Exit. It opened in 1988 as a place for people to encounter art and culture inside one of the city’s busiest stations. The museum reopened in 2012 after restoration work.

Its setting is part of the visit. Sections of the station’s original red-brick structure remain visible, and exposed brick and steel beams appear on the first and second floors. The gallery’s spaces retain the character of the historic building rather than using standard white walls throughout. From the second floor, you can also look out over Tokyo Station.

Exhibitions across art, railways and design

The gallery presents around four to five temporary exhibitions each year. Its programme moves between modern and contemporary art, traditional Japanese and Western works, railway subjects, architecture and design. The exhibitions are organised around three themes: rediscovering modern art, railways and design, and contemporary art.

The subjects change, so check the current exhibition before making a special trip. Past shows have included work by artists such as Foujita and Finnish artist and designer Tapio Wirkkala. Railway-related displays can connect the art programme with the building and the station’s own history. The exhibition spaces are arranged within the shape of the North Dome, with displays spread over several floors.

Planning your visit

The gallery is directly connected to JR Tokyo Station, so you can reach it without going outdoors. That makes it a convenient option between train journeys or while exploring the station’s shops. Admission is paid; the input does not specify a current ticket price. Advance ticket purchase is recommended, and a vending machine is available at the entrance.

The gallery also has a shop for exhibition-related souvenirs. Crowds can build during popular shows, including on weekdays, and the shop may have a queue. Exhibition information and interpretation can differ between shows, so check the details for the exhibition you plan to see.
