Shisendo Jozan-ji

Shisendo Jozan-ji, commonly known as Shisen-do, is a temple in Ichijoji in Kyoto’s Sakyo Ward.

Shisendo Jozan-ji, commonly known as Shisen-do, is a temple in Ichijoji in Kyoto’s Sakyo Ward. The former home of Edo-period samurai and cultural figure Jozan Ishikawa is known for its traditional rooms and garden. Take off your shoes to enter the hall, where portraits, poems and other objects are displayed, then sit on the tatami and look out over the garden. A pond, carp and seasonal foliage reward a slower visit, especially in autumn.

Shisendo was the residence of Jozan Ishikawa, a samurai and cultural figure of the Edo period. He spent his later years at this mountain cottage in Ichijoji, in Kyoto’s Sakyo Ward. The name Shisen-do refers to the hall’s portraits and poems of 36 poets.

The site brings together a traditional house and a garden. Its setting gives the visit a quiet, contemplative character. In the inner part of the house, remove your shoes before entering. The tatami rooms provide a place to sit and take in the garden and the sounds of nature.

Inside, look for the poet portraits, poems and other objects displayed in the temple. A scroll depicting a female ghost is among the artworks visitors have noted. Photography is prohibited inside, so take time to observe the displays while you are there.

The tatami is for sitting, not lying down. Keep your visit calm and follow the rules in the rooms. The garden can be admired from the interior, then explored outside; some areas may be closed, so check what is accessible during your visit.

Garden and autumn foliage

The garden includes a pond with carp and is a reason to spend more than a quick walk through the house. Autumn brings color to the garden and its bamboo grove. From the veranda, the leaves frame views of the traditional architecture and the garden. The foliage season is a popular time to visit, so arriving just after opening gives you an earlier start.

Allow around 30 to 40 minutes for a visit at an unhurried pace. You can spend longer sitting and looking around, but the grounds are compact enough for a shorter stop. The garden’s appearance changes with the seasons, so the autumn view is one particular draw rather than the only time to come.
