Kurz gesagt

Hakone works as a day trip from Tokyo, but stay one night if you want the onsen and Mt Fuji at dawn. The Hakone Freepass (¥7,100 for 2 days from Shinjuku) pays off if you ride the full loop and use its Odakyu round trip. It does not cover Romancecar seats, which cost extra. Skip the pass if you only visit Hakone-Yumoto for a bath.

Day trip or overnight? The verdict

Hakone works as a day trip from Tokyo, but stay one night if you want the onsen and Mt Fuji at dawn. The full loop of train, cable car, ropeway and lake boat fits in a day if you leave Shinjuku by 8am. It leaves little time to soak, and the best Fuji views come early in the morning, not in the afternoon haze.

Choose the day trip if you have one spare day in Tokyo, the weather is clear and you are happy to spend most of it on transport. Choose the overnight if you want a ryokan dinner, a bath at night and a quiet start by the lake. Our Hakone travel guide has the full picture, and the wider Japan travel guide shows where Hakone fits in a longer route.

The choice also depends on the season. In summer haze and the rainy season, the day trip loses its main reward, because Fuji is rarely visible. From November to February, when the air is clear, a night in Hakone pays off much more. Check the best time to visit Japan before you decide.

Getting there: Romancecar, express or shinkansen

There are three ways to reach Hakone from Tokyo. The Odakyu Romancecar is a reserved-seat limited express from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 80 minutes. The regular Odakyu express takes longer, often with a change at Odawara, and costs less. The shinkansen from Tokyo Station reaches Odawara in 35–50 minutes, then you change to the Tozan train for the 15-minute ride to Yumoto.

The Romancecar surcharge is ¥1,200 for adults from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, on top of the ordinary fare. It is worth it if you want a reserved seat and big windows, and if you travel at a busy time. On weekdays, the regular express is fine. Freepass holders ride ordinary Odakyu trains on the pass and pay the Romancecar surcharge separately.

The shinkansen is quickest if you start from Tokyo Station or are coming from Kyoto or Osaka. A JR Pass covers the shinkansen to Odawara but not the Odakyu line or the Hakone transport, so a JR Pass rarely makes sense for Hakone alone. See whether the JR Pass is worth it before you buy anything.

Is the Hakone Free Pass worth it?

The Hakone Freepass is a 2-day or 3-day pass. From Shinjuku, it costs ¥7,100 for 2 days and ¥7,500 for 3 days for adults, and ¥1,600 or ¥1,850 for children aged 6–11. It includes one Odakyu round trip between Shinjuku and Odawara on regular trains, unlimited rides on the Hakone Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway, sightseeing cruise and the Tozan, Odakyu Highway and Tokai buses in the designated area, and discounts at museums and attractions.

See the official Odakyu Hakone Freepass page for current prices and where to buy. An Odawara-start pass without the Odakyu Line costs ¥6,000 for 2 days, and a Fuji Hakone Pass for 3 days is also sold if you plan to go on to the Fuji Five Lakes.

The pass pays off when you ride most of the loop: Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway and the boat, plus the Odakyu return. It also saves you buying tickets at each stage and lets you hop on buses freely. It is not worth it if you go to Hakone-Yumoto for a bath and return, or if you take the shinkansen to Odawara and ride only one or two sections. In that case buy single tickets.

The pass is valid for consecutive days, so a day trip uses only one of the two days. If you plan a day trip, the pass still pays off if you use the whole loop, but the saving is smaller. If you stay one night, it covers both days.

The loop, stage by stage

The classic loop starts at Hakone-Yumoto. The Tozan railway climbs to Gora in about 40 minutes, with switchbacks and tunnels. At Gora you change to the cable car to Sounzan, about 10 minutes, and then the ropeway over the steaming valley of Owakudani to Togendai, about 30 minutes in total. At Togendai you take a pirate-style sightseeing boat across Lake Ashi to Hakone-machi or Moto-Hakone, about 25–30 minutes.

From the lake, buses run back to Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto. Allow about 60 minutes to Odawara and 35–40 to Yumoto. Add walking, queues and stops, and the loop is a 6–8 hour day. Ropeway and cruise queues are longest at weekends and in autumn color weeks.

The ropeway can close for wind, maintenance or volcanic gas, and substitute buses run. Check the operator's status that morning. The loop can also be done in reverse, starting at the lake, which sometimes avoids the morning crowd at the ropeway. See our note on where to see Mt Fuji for clear-day viewpoints.

Day trip plan: what fits

A realistic day trip leaves Shinjuku on a Romancecar around 8am, arrives at Hakone-Yumoto around 9:20am, and rides to Gora by 10:30am. Cable car and ropeway take you to Owakudani by noon, where you can try the black eggs and see the vents. Lunch at Togendai or by the lake, the cruise at 2pm, and buses back to Odawara by 4pm. That gets you to Tokyo in the early evening.

It is doable but rushed, and it leaves no time for a bath. If you must choose, skip the museums and keep the ropeway and the lake, or do the loop in one direction and take the bus back. On a day with poor visibility, the ropeway views are limited, so consider swapping the loop for a bath and a walk.

Weather and when not to go

Weather decides the day more than anything else. Hakone sits in the mountains, and cloud can sit over the ridge while Tokyo is bright. The best Fuji views come from November to February, on clear mornings. In the rainy season in June, in the summer haze, and around typhoons in September, views are often lost, and the ropeway can close in strong wind.

If the forecast is poor, do not force the loop. Swap the ropeway for a bath and a walk by the river in Hakone-Yumoto, or postpone by a day. A pass bought for two days gives you some flexibility, since you can move the loop to the second day. Check the operator's status pages the evening before and that morning.

Weekends and holidays add crowds. The ropeway, the cruise and the buses back to Odawara build queues in autumn color weeks and in Golden Week. A weekday, or a start before 9am, avoids most of it. Check the best time to visit Japan before you commit to dates.

Overnight: what one night adds

One night lets you split the loop over two days, take a bath at night and again in the morning, and eat a ryokan dinner. It also puts you at the lake or in Gora early, when Fuji is most often clear and the boats and ropeway are quiet. It is the better choice from November to February and in the shoulder seasons.

Where to sleep depends on your plan. Gora suits the sightseeing loop, Hakone-Yumoto is the easiest and cheapest, and Moto-Hakone gives you the lake. Our guide on where to stay in Hakone compares five bases. Book early for weekends, Golden Week and November.

If you are pairing Hakone with other places, the Free Pass and a night in a ryokan combine well with the Fuji Five Lakes or Kamakura. See the Kamakura day trip from Tokyo for a seaside stop on the way back.

Häufige Fragen

Can you do Hakone as a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes. Leave Shinjuku by 8am, ride the loop of Tozan train, cable car, ropeway and lake cruise in about 6–8 hours, and be back in Tokyo by 7pm. It is a full day with little time for a bath, so one night is more relaxed.

Is the Hakone Free Pass worth it?

Yes, if you ride the whole loop and use the Odakyu round trip from Shinjuku. It is not worth it if you only go to Hakone-Yumoto for a bath or take the shinkansen to Odawara and only ride one section.

How much is the Hakone Free Pass?

From Shinjuku it is ¥7,100 for 2 days and ¥7,500 for 3 days for adults. Children pay ¥1,600 and ¥1,850. A Hakone-only pass from Odawara costs ¥6,000 for 2 days. Check the Odakyu page on the day you buy.

Do you need to book the Romancecar?

Yes, seats are reserved and there is a surcharge of ¥1,200 for adults from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. Book ahead for weekends and holidays. The Free Pass does not include the surcharge.

Is Hakone worth it in the rain?

Less so. Clouds hide Fuji and the lake views, and the ropeway can close in wind or volcanic gas. If the forecast is bad, consider staying at a ryokan with a good bath, or go another day.

How many days do you need in Hakone?

Two days and one night is the sweet spot. One day is enough for the loop if you start early. Add a second night only for hiking or a slow spa stay.
