In Dorsoduro, between Campo dei Carmini and Campo Santa Margherita, the Scuola Grande dei Carmini is a former Venetian confraternity hall known for its Baroque interiors. Its central draw is the Sala Capitolare, where nine ceiling canvases by Giambattista Tiepolo bring colour and movement to the room. Look, too, for carved ceilings, patterned marble floors and works by Venetian artists including Piazzetta. The building is also used for Baroque music concerts, so check the schedule if you would like to pair the art with a performance.
A confraternity hall in Dorsoduro

The Scuola Grande dei Carmini stands between Campo dei Carmini and Campo Santa Margherita, in Venice’s Dorsoduro district. Its roots reach back to 1286, when the institution began as a civic and charitable confraternity. It was formally founded in 1594 and recognised as a Scuola Grande in 1767.
The building grew as the confraternity’s needs changed. Work to expand the original structure began in 1626, and a second building was acquired in 1668. Baldassare Longhena was commissioned to bring the two structures together with a unified façade. He worked on the project until his death in 1682; his associate Antonio Gaspari continued the construction.
Tiepolo in the Sala Capitolare

The most celebrated room is the Sala Capitolare, or Chapter Hall. Nine ceiling canvases by Giambattista Tiepolo fill its upper space. Completed in 1739, they depict theological and cardinal virtues. Their placement draws the eye upward, while the room’s carved details and gilded decoration add to the sense of height and richness.
The interior also contains work by other Venetian painters and sculptors, including Giacomo Piazzetta. The collection is not extensive, and the visit is centred on the rooms and their decoration rather than a large display of paintings. Take time to notice the patterned inlaid marble floors and wood panelling alongside the ceiling art.
The chapel and music
A chapel dedicated to Santa Maria del Carmelo has a single nave and a wooden-beam ceiling. Works by Sante Piatti and Giacomo Piazzetta are among its contents. Its quieter scale offers a contrast to the decorated Chapter Hall.
The ground-floor salon hosts Baroque music concerts, with programmes that can include composers beyond Vivaldi. Concerts are not part of every visit, so check the schedule in advance if hearing live music is important to your plans. The historic rooms also provide a setting for performances such as the opera Dido and Aeneas.
