Built in the 14th century, the Palazzo dei Duchi di Santo Stefano was commissioned by Duke De Spuches as his residence in Taormina. Its design brings together Sicilian Gothic, Arabian and Norman elements. The square, tower-like form and surviving swallow-tailed merlons give the building its Gothic character, with Romanesque traces also noted in its structure.

The upper part of the east and north facades has a distinctive stone pattern. A wavy band of dark lava stone alternates with diamond-shaped inlays in white Syracuse stone, creating a lace-like effect. Take time to look at the decorated windows as well as the larger forms of the facade. One doorway once had a drawbridge.
