Castello dei Ventimiglia stands on Mount Marone in Gangi, Sicily, with origins in the 13th century. It remains a private residence, so visitors can admire it only from outside. The main detail to look for is the large Mannerist stone portal facing Piazza Valguarnera. The castle’s rear section is partly in ruins, and the hilltop setting gives views over Gangi. Include it as a brief stop while exploring the town, rather than planning an interior castle visit.
A castle on Mount Marone

Castello dei Ventimiglia dates to the 13th century and stands at the top of Mount Marone, one of Gangi’s highest points. The Ventimiglia family, lords of Gangi, built it, though they made greater use of their castles at Castelbuono and Geraci.
The castle changed hands over the centuries. In 1625, the Ventimiglias sold it to the Graffeo family, who altered and embellished the building. It later passed to the Valguarnera family and then to the Milletarì family, who use it as a private residence.
What you can see from outside

The castle is not open for interior visits. From Piazza Valguarnera, look for the entrance portal, framed by large blocks of Mannerist stonework. The rear section is partly ruined and has not been rebuilt.
The castle’s original chapel was given to the Capuchin fathers in 1604. It was later enlarged into Chiesa del Monte, whose portal also faces the square. The castle is best treated as one stop among Gangi’s landmarks, with the exterior and the views from the hilltop as the focus.
