Cala Levante

Cala Levante is a rocky swimming cove on Pantelleria’s eastern side, near the natural arch known as Arco dell’Elefante.

Cala Levante is a rocky swimming cove on Pantelleria’s eastern side, near the natural arch known as Arco dell’Elefante. A wooden sunbathing platform and concrete access points make it easier to reach the clear, shallow water than at many rocky stretches of coast. The cove is sheltered in some wind conditions, and a ladder helps you climb back onto the rocks after a swim. Come for a dip and views of the arch; a nearby bar and restaurant provide a place to stop afterward.

Cala Levante lies beside Cala Tramontana, separated from it by a rocky ridge. The two bays can offer different conditions depending on the wind: Cala Levante is calmer when the wind comes from the north-west, while Cala Tramontana is sheltered from the south-east. Check conditions before swimming rather than assuming the water will be calm.

The cove was once used as shelter for boats during strong sirocco winds. Its position beside the natural arch also makes this a distinctive stretch of Pantelleria’s coast, with volcanic rock framing the water.

The nearby Arco dell’Elefante is a natural rock formation at the water’s edge. Its sloping lava rock forms an arch that resembles an elephant lowering its trunk to drink. The cove and neighbouring Cala Tramontana are also noted for sunrise views.

Concrete platforms provide access to the sea, and the seabed here is less steep than at some other spots around the island. The wooden platform gives you a place to rest between swims. The shore remains rocky, so bring footwear suited to getting in and out of the water.
