Cala Domestica is a beach near Buggerru on Sardinia’s southwestern coast, set in a deep inlet between steep cliffs. Fine sand and clear, shallow water make the cove a draw for swimming, snorkelling and coastal photographs. A short rocky path leads from the main beach to a smaller, more sheltered cove; another trail climbs towards a Spanish tower with views over the bay. Ruins and tunnels from the area’s mining past remain near the shore, adding a glimpse of its former working life.

A former mining inlet

Cala Domestica lies on the southwestern coast of Sardinia, near Buggerru. The inlet’s steep cliffs enclose a crescent of sand, and its clear water shifts from green to blue above shallow, sandy seabed. The cliffs and the cove’s sheltered shape give the beach a fjord-like appearance.

The beach area once served the nearby mines. Boats were loaded here with minerals, and the remains of warehouses, depots and tunnels can still be found around the shore. Mining activity continued in the area until 1940. These structures offer a reminder that the cove’s history is tied to work as well as its coastal setting.

The smaller cove and tower trail

From the northern side of the beach, a short walk leads to a smaller cove. A rocky path on the right side of the main beach also reaches this quieter stretch, which is more sheltered. The route adds a little exploring to a beach stop, though the path is uneven.

Another trail climbs towards a Spanish tower built on the rocks in the 17th century. The higher viewpoint looks back over the bay. A longer coastal walk is also described as a clockwise loop, with a demanding initial climb along the cliff. Take care with your footing, and avoid this route if heights make you uncomfortable. The trail continues from a bridge over the old railway, following the sign for Canal Grande before rejoining the route.

Swimming and snorkelling conditions

The clear water and sandy shallows suit swimming and snorkelling. Fish gather around the rocks at the edge of the bay, and the surrounding caves and rock formations are part of the cove’s underwater appeal. Conditions are not always calm: mistral winds can reach the beach, and rough seas can affect swimming. Check the conditions before entering the water.

The beach is especially popular in summer. Parking is charged during the summer months, and access may be restricted once the car park is full. In the low season, the cove can be much quieter. If you are planning a beach day, bring shade or check rental costs before deciding what to carry.
