A medieval stronghold above Iglesias

Salvaterra Castle was built after 1258, probably at the direction of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca. It takes its name from Salvaterra Hill, where its position gave it a view over the city.
The castle once had a strategic role in the territories of the Republic of Pisa. It could oversee Iglesias and communicate with other fortifications, including the castles at Villamassargia and Acquafredda di Siliqua, as well as San Michele Castro in Cagliari.
From military site to later additions

By the end of the 19th century, the castle had lost its military purpose. A neo-Gothic villa and a glassworks were added to the site, both designed by engineer Edoardo Sanna.
Salvaterra is one of Iglesias’s key medieval landmarks, alongside Santa Chiara Cathedral and surviving sections of the city’s original defensive wall. It can fit into an itinerary focused on the town’s medieval history, or be combined with its mining heritage and other local routes.
