Fortezza Vecchia is a coastal fortress on a granite promontory near Villasimius and Capo Carbonara, overlooking the sea and the Gulf of Cagliari. Its stone structure and elevated position make the visit a good stop for views as well as a look at Sardinia’s military history. Built in the late 16th century as part of a network of coastal defences, it is also a peaceful place to watch the sunset. Check for art exhibitions or installations during your visit.

A coastal defence near Capo Carbonara

Fortezza Vecchia

Fortezza Vecchia stands on a granite promontory near Capo Carbonara. From this position it overlooks the eastern part of the Gulf of Cagliari, between Capo Boi and Cala Caterina.

The fortress was built between 1580 and 1590, probably adapting an earlier structure that may date to the 14th century. Its construction formed part of a Spanish defensive system of connected coastal towers, planned under Philip II to counter attacks by Barbary forces. A garrison was stationed here from 1590 or 1591, and the fortress continued in its defensive role until 1847.

The fortress structure

The original plan was an equilateral triangle, with sides of about 11 metres and a height of around 10 metres. The entrance faced the sea and was raised above ground level. The surviving stonework gives a sense of the structure’s compact scale and its position above the coast.

The headland is part of what makes a visit worthwhile: the fortress looks out over the surrounding shoreline, with broad views across the water. The site is also a calm place to pause, particularly as the sun sets.

Tours, exhibitions and family activities

Guided tours can add context to the fortress’s place in the island’s coastal defences. Staff can explain its history and its relationship to other towers in Sardinia. Families may find children’s scavenger hunts, sometimes with prizes, and the fortress can host art exhibitions or installations.

Check what is taking place during your visit, since exhibitions and activities are not described as permanent. After exploring, nearby restaurants and boat rentals give you options for continuing your day around the coast.
