About 40 minutes from Cagliari, Castello di Acquafredda is a medieval fortress above Siliqua, built in the thirteenth century to guard access to nearby mines. A steep path winds through pine forest and three lines of defences before reaching the summit, where the remaining castle walls and broad views over the Sardinian countryside reward the climb. Look out for birds and lizards along the way. The route includes uneven steps and walkways, so allow time to climb at a comfortable pace.

Castello di Acquafredda stands on a steep, cone-shaped mountain overlooking Siliqua. Built in the thirteenth century, it was positioned to control access to local silver and lead mines. The fortress later passed from Pisa to Aragon before falling into disuse.

The remains give a sense of the site’s defensive layout and the work involved in building on the hillside. As you climb, the route passes three lines of fortifications, each marking another part of the approach to the castle.

The climb passes through dense pine forest, with stone steps and wooden walkways along the route. The woodland brings birdsong and the scent of pine, and lizards may be seen beside the path. An audio guide can be accessed on a phone, adding context as you explore.

Only parts of the upper walls remain, but their position on the steep slope makes the former stronghold easier to understand. The final section is the most exposed, so take care there, particularly with children. The climb and descent can be strenuous, and the path is best approached as a hike rather than a quick stop.
