A fountain in Piazza Mattei
Fontana delle Tartarughe stands in Piazza Mattei, among the historic buildings of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto. The fountain was commissioned by the Mattei family, whose palace overlooks the square.
Giacomo della Porta designed it, and Taddeo Landini sculpted its bronze figures. Work took place between 1581 and 1588, during a period when Rome was expanding its public water system.
The figures and turtles
The original composition showed four bronze youths supporting dolphins. The turtles that give the fountain its name were added later, in the 17th century. Their careful placement at the basin’s edge draws the eye to details that can be easy to miss at first glance.
The fountain combines bronze and marble in a compact design. Take a moment to view the figures from around the basin before continuing through the surrounding neighborhood.
