Visconti Castle in Pavia was built after 1360 by Galeazzo II Visconti, Lord of Milan, as a residence for his family. Today it houses the Civic Museums of Pavia, with medieval stone art, a painting gallery, Lombard finds and ancient Egyptian artifacts. The castle sits in a green setting with a quiet garden, which can be visited without a ticket. Allow time for the museums and for the painted rooms, which are decorated differently from one to the next.

The castle was built after 1360 by Galeazzo II Visconti, soon after the Visconti took Pavia, which had been a free city-state until then. The credited architect is Bartolino da Novara.

The castle served as the main residence of the Visconti family, while the political capital of the state remained Milan. Its rooms and courtyard were later decorated on a large scale, and today the building is the home of the city's civic museums.

Architecture and the courtyard

The main entrance is set between two front towers, and the building is framed by a moat with drawbridges. The castle was first planned as a palace for pleasure, yet it kept several typical castle features.

The outside has large mullioned windows. Inside, a central courtyard and frescoed rooms in the Gothic style give the castle its character. The walls of each room are painted differently. The Blue Room takes its name from the lapis lazuli used in its decoration, along with gold and other costly materials.

Inside the museums

The civic collection includes the Pinacoteca Malaspina painting gallery, an archaeological museum, a hall of Lombard material and the Robecchi Bricchetti Museum. Medieval stone art is one of the strongest parts of the displays.

Ancient Egyptian artifacts are part of the collection, a surprise in a castle of this kind. The collection is well curated, and the staff are helpful when it comes to explaining what is on show.

Planning the visit

The garden can be enjoyed without a ticket. For the museums, the building has several floors, but access may be limited to the ground and first floors. Some galleries may be unavailable on a particular day, so it helps to check on arrival.

The castle also hosts festivals and exhibitions, including the Autunno Pavese food and wine fair held in September. The entrance, restroom and parking lot are listed as wheelchair accessible.
