Giardino della Kolymbethra

At the foot of Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, Giardino della Kolymbethra turns a rocky cleft into a shaded garden of citrus and olive trees.

At the foot of Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, Giardino della Kolymbethra turns a rocky cleft into a shaded garden of citrus and olive trees. Walk among traditional fruit varieties and more than 300 labelled plant species, with the ancient temples above as a striking contrast. The garden also preserves traditional irrigation methods and an underground passage known as the hypogeum. You can pause at the picnic tables, and marmalades made from fruit grown here may be available to sample.

A garden below the temples

Giardino della Kolymbethra lies in a natural cleft at the foot of the Valley of the Temples. Its citrus and olive trees, flowering plants and shade offer a different setting from the exposed archaeological landscape above. The garden is managed by FAI, a non-profit heritage organisation, which has restored it as a place to see traditional fruit varieties and irrigation methods.

More than 300 labelled plant species grow among the groves. Almond trees are part of the valley’s agricultural landscape, alongside olive and citrus cultivation. The garden also has picnic tables for a rest among the trees.

Water and the ancient landscape

The garden occupies the area where an artificial basin known as the Kolymbethra once collected water. The basin was fed by underground aqueducts attributed to the architect Feace. The valley’s agricultural use continued across the centuries, and the surviving groves give the site a living connection to that landscape.

An underground passage, known as the hypogeum, runs through the hill and connects with historic sites in the area, including the Temple of Castor and Pollux. Access to the cave or passage should be booked in advance.

Planning your visit

The entrance is at Door 5, Porta V. The path down into the garden is steep, so allow for the descent when planning a visit, especially if uneven or sloping paths are a concern. A local guide can add context about the garden and the surrounding history.

There is a separate charge for the garden in ordinary visits. The grounds provide a shaded place to pause during a day at the temples, though a tight one-day itinerary may leave little time for the detour. Bring food if you want to use the picnic tables.
