Its ten shrines are cut into sandstone cliffs beside the Pakerisan River, with rice fields and jungle around the site. The carvings are associated with Balinese royalty and were made as places of worship and memorials. Follow the paths through the different parts of the complex, and look for the smaller temple with a waterfall on the right as you descend. Reaching the valley means tackling many stairs.

Gunung Kawi is an archaeological complex in Tampaksiring, in Gianyar Regency. Its shrines are cut into sandstone cliffs along the Pakerisan River. The site is commonly dated to the 11th century, and inscriptions above the shrines are said to indicate their approximate construction period.

There are ten shrines in total, each more than seven metres high. Their form evokes temple buildings, and they are associated with Balinese royalty. The complex has served as a place of worship and as a memorial; it is also linked to the Warmadewa dynasty. Small stone caves, rock-cut structures and sculptures are found around the grounds.

The temple sits at the base of a river valley, with rice fields and jungle surrounding the complex. Paths lead down through the grounds to the shrines and other parts of the site. The descent involves many stairs, so comfortable pacing and water are useful.

A smaller temple with a waterfall lies off to the right partway down the stairs. It can be a quieter stop within the wider area. Sarongs are provided with tickets at a point farther from the parking area. Vendors also sell sarongs near the entrance, but visitors do not need to buy one there.
