Besakih Great Temple, or Pura Besakih, is a large Hindu temple complex in Rendang, on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern Bali. Known as the island’s Mother Temple, it is an active place of worship, with shrines and terraces climbing the mountainside. Look for the split stone gateways and detailed stonework, and take in the views across the valleys when the mountain is clear. Local worshippers come to pray and carry offerings; ceremonies bring chanting, prayers and traditional dress to the grounds.

Pura Besakih, commonly called the Mother Temple of Bali, stands on the slopes of Mount Agung in Besakih, Karangasem. It is the island’s largest and most important Hindu temple complex, formed from many separate but connected temples. The buildings climb the mountainside in terraces, so the walk gives a sense of the site’s scale as well as its architecture.

The main temple is Pura Penataran Agung. Its position among the other shrines makes the complex feel like a collection of sacred precincts rather than one enclosed building. Stone gateways, stairways and carved details mark the routes between levels. From higher parts of the grounds, the view opens across green valleys and the surrounding volcanic landscape, though clouds can hide Mount Agung later in the day.

A living place of worship

Besakih is an active religious site, not simply a monument. Balinese Hindu worshippers come to pray and bring offerings, and ceremonies take place throughout the year. During festivals, the grounds can fill with devotees in traditional clothing, while prayers, chanting and dance performances form part of the occasion.

Give worshippers space and treat the temple as a place of devotion. Visitors can observe the grounds, but access to sacred areas is restricted; prayer areas are for worshippers. A sarong and sash are required to enter the temple grounds. If you are interested in learning about a ceremony, ask a guide rather than approaching participants or entering a restricted area.

Planning your visit

The complex covers a steep area, with uphill walking and stone steps between its terraces. Comfortable shoes will make moving around easier, and sunscreen is useful on sunny days. Arriving in the morning, around 8 to 10 AM, gives you a better chance of seeing Mount Agung before clouds gather.

Guides are available to help explain the site and its customs; ask what is included when arranging your visit. Sellers along the route may offer souvenirs or offerings, but buying them is not required. Take time to look at the architecture and the wider setting, and keep in mind that the grounds remain a place of worship while you explore.
